UVW mapping mirroring

i'm trying to learn to use 3d software so trying to make a halo map, currently doing the tutorial and i selected UVW mapping and i have it map a bitmap for the ground terrain, it works fine but when i click back on edit mesh the bitmap switches around so that it is mirrored(river is supose to be on east and gets switched to west) this makes it hard model the terrain, wondering if anyone knows why this is happening and how to fix it.
