Brute Guy
Hello all, I feel like I have never been able to achieve a chrome that is 'sexy'. I often see examples of this 'sexy chrome' which hold a certain character and always show a wild range of dynamic reflections. Something that I feel embelishes this is the max 8 logo. I have been trying to copy the same features of the material but so far have had little success. I have included an example of my version of the logo and the original max 8 logo...can you guess which one is mine:) As you can see I am a mile off, there are some obvious reasons why its a mile off, but I am struggling to understand the finer qualities that make-up the 'better' version. So, my questions are: 1. The 'better' logo appears to occlude the floor form its reflection but the floor reflects the logo in a very washed out way, how might this be achieved? 2. If you turn your attention to the circled 'A' the range of gradient and contrast from highlight to black is really good, I am finding this hard to achieve this. Usually I would use falloff maps and reduce my refl. glossiness but more often than not, I end up with very satin looking materials that don't have the sharp highlight qualities that is characterisc with chrome. The 'better' logo seems to achieve the satin/flowing refl. but with the sharpness of the chrome see labeled 'B'. How is this done? (I am using a studio HDRI with no vray lights and the chrome is pretty standard) If anyone has any pointers for me, then I would love to hear from you. Horhe
At point 'B' the shape is bulging, at point 'A' it is concave, that is the reason why it is catching all those nice speculars and reflections. You need to work a bit on your mesh to let it reflect the enviroment. Edited January 31, 2009 by Horhe
Stephen Thomas
Is it just me or in the original image does the surface not seem to be made of the same material? Almost like the object is rising out of a vat of liquid chrome. Also I think that the original has a bit of a lip that runs round the entire edge rather than a smooth bevel. ihabkal
my 2 cents: most of the times these amazing logos have a lot of post work on them, I will refer you to older issues of 3d world magazine, they used to feature artists who talked about how they would paint hilights on in a nice and precise way. Ky Lane
Also render at triple the size. You lose detail that small.
