Crazy Homeless Guy
I am always browsing ScriptSpot, and a few other places for scripts that will make me more efficient. I found this one today, and so far it works like a charm. I often have 2 or 3 copies of max open, and I often have to save selected, and merge that information into the scene I am working on. This script will allow you to copy and paste between open copies of Max. http://www.scriptspot.com/3ds-max/copy-and-paste-objects

Tim Nelson
Awesome! I can't believe Max does not let you do this already, it has always bugged me.

Hey guys - glad to see my script is still useful. :-) I actually have been working with multiple instances of max as part of my daily workflow for years now - I use the script every day to copy / paste objects. My workflow is to have my master file open, copy an object or two out of it (say a huge revit file) and paste into a new, clean file where I work on it and then copy/paste it back to the original file. Trevor Tizard
Hi, Looks like a great script. There is no mention as to whether it will work with max2009 though? Thanks.
Tim Nelson
I think he had made a comment on scriptspot about it being forward compatible. Anyways, yes it works on 2009 perfectly.

cgrant3d
Hi, Looks like a great script. There is no mention as to whether it will work with max2009 though? Thanks. Thanks for pointing this out - I've updated the post on ScriptSpot to reflect current version compatibility. FYI - in nearly all cases scripts are forward compatible. Tim Nelson
I don't suppose it'd be possible to write a script which would allow you to paste in linework from autocad that you have copied to the clipboard, would it? It's a pain when you only want certain parts of a dwg to be imported into max. I usually just w-block out those items, and then import to max, but it would be great to have a copy/paste from acad->max.

Sorry - the script actually doesn't touch the windows clipboard at all and 3ds doesn't have any way to read geometry from the clipboard (that I know of at least). It would be nice to be able to interact between different autodesk apps though...
Crazy Homeless Guy
Chris, I want to thank you again for the copy and paste script, I use it nearly everyday. I also I wanted to post another script that popped up today that is very similar. I will wind up using both in my workflow. The new one allows you to store 3 various geometry sets for pasting. http://www.scriptspot.com/3ds-max/scripts/copitor I think he should have given Chris credit for the idea though. I could never go back to my old workflow for pulling geometry from old models after I got started with the copy paste script.
