Hi all,

Ive recently graduated from college and i couldn't of picked a worse time to be looking for a junior/graduate position!

I haven't given up, far from it, but i am running out of options so i thought id ask around, Do any of you know of any companies that could possibly be looking to expand in the near future? because Ive been getting a lot of "sure!, well hire you...but not now"

If not in the Brisbane area, maybe Melbourne?

thanks for the help guys. icon14.gif

Hi Samuel

Interesting stuff in your portfolio, graduate from qantm perhaps?

We are one company (Pixel Focus) that is still expanding but I think that now is perhaps the worst time possible to be looking for work in any country. You are lucky that your in Australia and in Brisbane as the effects are minimised to some degree, Melbourne and Sydney are getting hit pretty hard, lots of architectural jobs being axed. Your architectural content in your portfolio is quite strong but you have very little of it, do some more renderings and start sending them to the major Australian companies (including us), if your willing to travel you may be lucky even in this dire financial climate.

It's kind of strange this financial crisis. The firm I work within has got more work than ever and I've got more work waiting to be done than I had for the last 2 quarters. In contrast alot of builders in NSW are having a really hard time. It seems to be hitting some people but not others...

I guess all you can do is keep calling places and getting interviews. Good luck!

Hey Justin

Long time no talk.......I'm back in QLD now, you me and Ky will have to catch up at some stage when the haze clears. We've recently been doing some work with your Melbourne office, a bunch of really great guys.

Sometimes we can be strangely fortunate in hard times, while there are less projects around, developers are finding it increasingly important to have the very best marketing tools available. Some of the worst periods in both arch vis and project marketing have been in development booms as all agents had to do to sell was make phone calls.

OK thanks for the advise. Much Appreciated.

and yes it was qantm, that's why i have a little amount of architectural renderings because we broaden our work/study to all different areas.

Just checked out your site...im guessing by travel you mean to a different state? I'm up for moving almost anywhere (metro) but only after April since i have a few things im organizing now.

Absolutly, we definiterly should get together.

That is exactly the way I see it too. As part of the marketing tool, 3D has become essential rather luxury. Additionally councils are requesting/ insisting of 3D perspectives with development applications. This is where most of my work lies. Brisbane has such a residential shortage that developers are under alot of pressure to deliver ASAP. Along with K Rudds anouncment to fix up a few thousand social houses and a push on infrastructure projects, I for one am anticipating a bit of work coming my way.

Yeah, I've been advised by one of my largest clients to keep my schedule clear soon. Alot about to be dumped on me. I think its a case of people realising that to make money in this climate, they have to spend it too.

And same deal with Council DA's. Admittedly, Im getting less and less time to produce work, which is concerning - because its not about quality then, just budget and deadline. But, if the works there I guess?

Also, the Bris council is going through some philosophy changes in terms of the skyline here, and some things are getting knocked back for being too ugly! Ive had to re-do an image for 1 client 8 times just for DA approval (thats before marketing!).

Its a good thing that Concils are making it harder, frakly there are quite a few buildings where I just scratch my head, "What the?"

I struggled for a long time with the quality issue (Still do), at the end if the day not every peice can be a master piece and if it gets the job done then so be it. Although turn around times are constantly dropping, "What do you mean I cant have it yesterday?"

Considering we have been on a high for three years, running @ 120% in some ways the slow down is a bit of relief, just not too long:)

I hear that. Was given 3 days to render an entire mall from printed plans (most missing). UGH! Then, despite them being in the 1st render shown for approval, they complain about the RPC's not looking tropical 2hrs before the deadline. GRR.

But yeah, Im trying to pick the fights worth fighting.

Hey ODS, your work is good - why don't you freelance for while - until the crash blows over?

I have freelanced for about a year now (even during college) but i find it hard to get the next job.

Also my clients have so far been only interested in 1 project, then i loose them. i dont have developers or a company that requires work often.

Thats the main reason i wanted a full time position in a company.

it is tough to get the contact together, its taken many years for me. There again all my work is through word of mouth.

jhv

Yeah, agreed. Ive been in the industry since '99 and its taken a long time to get known, and build some good relationships; and I too get most if not all of my work by referral.

But remember ODS, that fortune favours the bold. Differentiate yourself from the crowd. You've already shown initiative by coming here and openly asking for advice which is a good start; but now you need to sit down and do some hard yards. Do some pro bono work, and make it shine.

If I have any projects I need some elements that need some timesaving work on, Ill be sure to drop you an email. Shoot me through your portfolio - ky@lanedigital.com - afterall, we all started from where you're at.

Its estimated that 1000 new people arrive in Brisbane every month, we have to put them somewhere, so there is alot of residential work going. Commercial stuff was really picking up early last year but alot of that has been put on hold for a while.

I think alot of people took the opportunity to have a longer break over Christmass, now they are all returning to work things are getting busy again.

Hang in there
