very cool effect to have for advertising, but sorry to say I am getting a bit annoyed with it every time i accidentally move over it.

Is there anyway to disable it or to have it hidden after I have clicked the link so that when a new ad gets in there it appears again?

Hy SandmanNinja's Wife ;), glad to see your helping out

I agree with him, but I only want to see new ad's, if i clicked it once then it should go away till a new add comes along.

the image viewer I don't have a problem with

Jeff, mayeb our CP's can be updated if we click it?

There's no way to make ads go away like that and it would kill our ability to sell ads. Advertisers pay for impressions, which are the number of times an ad shows up. If I removed them as soon as you saw them once, CGA might as well shut down now. I know not everyone likes ads, but the reality is they are what pay to keep this site up. Unless the mass concensus is to pay a fee to view this site, ads are here to stay.

the best cg community on the web (for free i might add) and people still like to find something wrong with it ;)

personally it doesn't bother me, i made the mistake the first time of scrollin over it, but now i know not to move the mouse that way.

anyhow, i quite like it, only because its a nice render behind it but hey. when your havin a bad day and your mind goes blank, and you get frustrated with the computer and move your mouse around erratically, BANG, up pops a bit of inspiration (well if it changed from time to time anyway)

anyway just my 2cents, the site is great, a silly advert isn't going to make me stop using it, and come on guys, lets be honest, it ain't that much of a ballache is it???

Jeff,

I fully understand your situation and don't really understand all the second guessing going on once you stated it was needed. I personally am glad I posses the human trait of "adaptability" ;)

Kidding aside, I realize people are proud to be part of the site and want to contribute in some fashion. I think that if it was put into perspective people migh realize the work and cost involved in running this site. People should stop by "RackSpace" and see how much it cost you to host the site on the most respected dedicated server host as well as the time and money it takes to maintain and upgrade the site.

May sound like I am brown nosing here, but it is really because I have a bit of a clue in what is involved. I would recommend that people click on banners at the sites they like to help the site and improve it's reputation with advertisers. Just a way to help out the site without costing you anything. Of course Jeff probably wouldn't suggest that to the members as I wouldn't ask my members to do that, but it does help the site out with advertisers FYI.

Joel says...

How about a "Donate" or "Support Us" link?

How about a "Supporter's Membership" that would give more "things" - PMs, a Portfolio, a fancy lil Badge under our Avatar to shame the other members into helping, etc.

Don't like the idea of a "Subscriber Only", but I'd pay a small amount on a monthly basis to help out.

This is something I definitely want to add once CGA2 comes out. When CGsociety first launched these same features a few years back they also advertised the ability to remove ads. This did not go over very well with advertisers. The reason being the same people who are willing to spend money on a membership are the same ones willing to spend money with advertisers, so effectively they were preventing the advertisers from reaching the people they were most interested in.

on another note, I of course read all of the feedback on the forums and take all of it into consideration, but the reality is that until there is another way for CGA to generate the same or more revenue than it does with advertising, the ads are not going anywhere.

I know this is not everyone's opinion, but over the years I've read a number of posts and received quite a few emails insinuating that I'm somehow not entitled to earn a living running this site. In fact I even had someone tell me that if I could not make enough money to run the site I should think about finding another job! I know a lot of this stems from people's sense of ownership of this community, which is great as it's what makes our industry so wonderful to be a part of.

What I don't understand is why this subject keeps coming up. Ads are how 90% of websites are supported on the internet. Even Google has ads. Why can't I earn a living doign this? Am I not entitled to earn a living doing what I love to do? And I do love running this site. I wake up thinking about it and I go to sleep thinking about it. At the end of the day do the ads prevent you from being a part of the community? Do they prevent you from accessing the information on this site? There are a lot of ad types that advertisers have asked to put on this site, which were declined as they were too intrusive. I think the balance of ads and content are quite good compared to a lot of other sites I visit on a regular basis.

Anyway, I always welcome feedback, but as Russell has suggested, you need to think about what you are asking. I pay more for my servers, bandwidth and many other misc services each month than I do for the mortgage on my house. I'm looking to add videos this year too which will easily add $1500-$3000 per month of added cost. And yes, ads will support those too.

Thanks for the FREE website thus far Jeff.

You have created something more than just a useful resource. This place is a REAL community!

If you have to start charging, then so be it. I have been here for 3+ years now and I don't even work on architecture projects!

Thanks Claudio! Glad to have you as part of this community.

Just before someone asks, as this is always the conversation that seems to come up next. I will never charge to access the site as it is now. I might eventually add new functionality that will be part of a premium membership, but you will never come to this site and be forbidden access to what you have become accustomed to over the last 7 years...wow, I can't believe it's been that long.
