Stalkie
Hi, I've just bought a new pc and am running xp 64 with a ATI Fire Pro V5700 video card. I've installed 3d max 2009 and with the driver set to Direct 3D, all the menus and dialog boxes break up and disappear all the time. I tried setting it to Open GL and the problem stopped but then max crashes frequently when I pan and zoom. Is it a problem with my video card, or is there a setting in the configure driver dialog that might sort it out. Please help - it's driving me crazy - I went to 64 bit to try and stabilise things and they are much worse than my old 32 bit! Helen
Paul Twyman
Hey, You are just down the road from me Are you using a microsoft intellimouse? Sounds like the driver issue with one of these. I had this problem a while back.
Stalkie
Hi Paul, Yes I am using a microsoft -not-very intellimouse. It is new so could well be the problem - when you say you had the same problem - was that with the dialog boxes going strange or crashing in Open GL? I am just up the road as I'm about 20 minutes from Bournemouth - what a small world!
Paul Twyman
Hey, Yes it was effecting the dialog boxes. Part of them would just disapear. It happened in both open gl and direct x but directx was worse for me. It is a known issue with the intellimouse driver and 3ds max. You need to uninstall the intelli mouse driver that came with the mouse i think it is called iclick or iview or something. If you look in the task manager you should see it running. You will also be able to find it in the remove programs panel. Your can still use your mouse using the standard windows driver that windows installs automatically and this shouldn't effect your viewports but you will not be able to assign custom functions to the mouse buttons or use any of the other fancy functions. Or get a new mouse Good old microsoft

Stalkie
Well, that pretty much sums it up! I will uninstall the software, as from what you describe that has to be the problem. Thank you very much for your help. I'm so relieved it is a simple solution! Helen
Paul Twyman
Yeah absolutely. I had just got a new machine as well and was sure it had to be something to do with my graphics card. I guess it is also worth seeing if microsoft update the driver to fix the problem at some point but they hadn't when I had the problem and I wouldn't count on it.
