danb4026
This image if for a potential client building a rental highrise in NYC. It is supposed to show the simple kitchen without any distractions. The image is actually taking the place of a 2d elevation that exists now. I am not sure what else to do with this image to make it more interesting and less "flat". They have 4 other kitchens for the rental portion of the building that I am starting on right now, but I need to make a good impression because the potential for good work is there. If I can get this image looking great, I can use that as a template for the remaining kitchens. Any tips and help would be greatly appreciated. Horhe
The textures in the image are washed out, the gamma setting are causing this. The wood textures is repeating and needs some more work, search the net for wood textures you will find loads, then perphaps edit them in PS a little. danb4026
Thanks....I am using a linear workflow with a gamma of 2.2. Should I adjust the gamma of individual materials as I bring them into max, or should I simply adjust the gamma down under color correction? Seems to defeat the purpose of linear workflow. Horhe
You could change each individual texture using the output dialog.
danb4026
Here's an update with a change to the wood and a bit more saturation. I have not PSed the image yet. Any improvement? Edited February 10, 2009 by danb4026
BrianKitts
are the appliances all texture maps? you would benefit from replacing the metal with an actual stainless steel shader that reflected the environment that the appliances are in. You should only texture map the control panels not the whole faces. This is what really is taking away any realism for me.
danb4026
OK Brian, I will change the metal to a stainless steel shader. Right now it is a texture map with a brushed metal jpg set as a map.
danb4026
I changed to a metal shader for the appliances. I am surprised at how difficult it is to get the metal to look correct. So far, without using a texture map, this is the best I could do. Adding the shader made the render go from about 5 minutes to around 30 minutes. I am not sure what else to do to improve upon it. PS....the wireframe you see in the foreground is simply there to show where the opposite counter top and sink are located. mi75
I'd probably darken the metal on the fridge and cook top a little and add a brushed metal reflect and Gloss map to the texture. I'd also probably close the gap between the cub draws too. How wide are your floor boards, I could be wrong but the look quiet narrow ? I think you've done a good job with what you have to work with and I totally understand when you get a very basic design and you have to make it look a million dollars, it sucks! Kyle
I quite like this image, it has potential. I agree with what has been said above. It seems that you may be missing some reflections in the shaders to give them depth. I also think that top of the cooker looks to matt black and you can't actually distinguish some parts. I would also look at your cupboard door handles too. I like how you have wireframed in the unit in front, nice touch.
danb4026
Great, I will make changes as you guys suggested and repost. The client is telling me that they like the metal on the previous image with the texture map better than then the new shader Not sure what to do. BrianKitts
New one looks more realistic to me. Try darkening down your diffuse color or backing off the reflection slightly, that way it has the overall appearance of the original maps, but has the proper reflection qualities of the new setup. the other thing that occured to me is how off-weighted the composition is, a better camera angle would really help. Everything is centered and right, with a big empty space on the left which isn't really working to your advantage.
danb4026
OK....is the metal any better now or worse?? I feel like I moving in circles with this simple scene. Brian, I will make some changes to the composition and repost again.

ezkapist
hi, love the work nice and clean.. also the last two images the camera is much better. the only thing i notice is above the fridge cupboard on the left the wall separator has some sort of colour bleed and its more visible on the last image. regards, b

danb4026
which tiles? The floor tiles or the backsplash?
mi75
The kitchen floor tiles and the bathroom floor tiles. Its just my personal taste, I like the bigger square light colored tiles.
danb4026
Understood....perhaps after viewing the renderings they will adapt and modify....that should be the purpose anyway.
