WAcky
probably the best thing to do is to go out and find a field of grass that hasn't been mown for a while and take a picture then comp it in with PS. There was a thread here a while ago with a large zip file with heaps of great grass photos but after searching for it I just cant find it. Perhaps someone has it bookmarked... good luck! jsf
Make the ground from two horizontal planes. Place a plane with the grass material about one inch above a plane with the dirt/earth material. Move vertices of the grass plan down in the Z axis in the areas you want exposed as dirt. Use soft selection and/or a mesh smooth modifier to ease the transition between the dirt and grass areas.
mhmd19732008
try use GroundWiz, google it, its a good plugin for making ground cover maps, then convert map to B/W and use it for displace grass.
ankit4d
To create such a effect i add a custom created opacity map of grass blades to a gradient material of grass. than apply it to a plain and spread it randomly over the area.
