tom10
Hi I am currently creating a render of a small loft conversion. I have downloaded this furniture but for some reason the model itself is not smooth. is there anyway I can get the edges smooth in c4d? I have uploaded an image to help explain. best regards Tom
AJLynn
Did you download a C4D file or another format that you converted? I ask because I see two issues - the long lines between polygons can be smoothed with a Phong tag, but there also look to be some geometry errors or simply messy modeling in the round bits on the cushion. Are there any reversed faces or odd looking mesh lines in there?
JonRashid
It looks like the smoothing groups on your object need assigning. If that doesnt work try welding all the verts some imports produces all polygons seperated so this fixes that
tom10
It is just a 3ds file. Sorry what is "all polygon seperated"? I have tried droping the model into a hyper nurb and that helped allot but made orbiting the model extremely slow. thanks tom
JonRashid
Soemtimes when models come in the polygons are not joined. Thats why I said try selecting all the verts and doing a weld. If the polygons aren't joined they cant form smoothing groups with each other
AJLynn
Smoothing groups? That sounds like 3DSMax. Tom: Are you new at this? I'd suggest reading up on the Optimize function and the Phong tag. HyperNurbs is a geometry subdividing thing, which you shouldn't need; Phong defines how C4D interprets polygons that are at a slight angle to each other as being smoothed (to keep you from needing too much subdivision) which is like smoothing groups in Max. Optimize is for the welding... basically, if you have 2 polygons joined in your mesh, they should have a mesh line between them with a vertex at each end - one line, one vertex at each end, which are shared by the polygons. If a model isn't set up right (and this can happen with imported files all the time) there will be 2 lines overlapping and 2 vertices at each end sharing the same coordinates, so it will look the same in wireframe but won't be joined. If they're not joined C4D will not smooth them together.
tom10
Yea I am new, I have been using cinema 4d for about 6 months. I do very little modeling using cinema, mostly rendering. I use archicad to model as this is the software we use at work. Thanks for all your advice. I will read up on optimize function and the phong tag. I presume it a case of attaching a phong tag or something then. Thanks again Tom
