Multi/Sub object problem

HI all,

I am a newby on CG, and this is my first thread (i think so, because i am also registered on other forums).

But okay, on subject.

I have some big problems with my Multi/Sub object. When I merge an object (archmodels), i press H to see how many subobject there are.

I thought when you click: Pick material from object. That it takes all materials from the whole object (subobjects) and sets them on multi/sub object map. But, it doesn't do that. It only takes 1 material (subobject), so i thought, when i click multi/sub object map, and go inside it, and then click: Pick material from object, that it would only get the material. It does so, but the multi/sub object mode is then gone. It doesn't work also.

Then i thought that when you pick one by one all object materials, then make on an other Multi/sub object map. then drag all object materials that you picked up with the: Pick material from object. Ok, i can drag it, and release it, and it is in the multi/sub object map with ID1. Then i drag and release all other materials. ID2,ID3, etc. (i use Copy, not Instance)

BUT the problem starts here, i can't assign an object from inside ID2/3 etc.I can assign it trough ID1. Doesn't work at all. When i go out and assign the multi/sub object to the object, then i see all black (as aspected).

How can i solve this problem? I need your help.

I use 3Ds max 2008, Vray 1,5 sp1, Vista Ultimate x64.

HI all, i just played for 8 minute's and discoverd atlast how it has to be done. I will write it overheren, because i have seen more people with this kind of problem. I hope that they will register and join us on this great CG.

This will do the trick, follow my steps, and i hope that you will have it succesfull:

1- Go into the orginal (object) file, (3ds max), and there in material editor, all materials are seperated (if it is), then make on an other material a multi/sub object, and drag alle materials on a different ID. (USE COPY!!)

Choose the subobject, and then chose Edit mesh>>Polygon, then scroll down, and apply the correct ID number.DON"T FORGET TO ASSIGN THE MATERIAL TO THE OBJECT!!, Try a test render. When it works, read further!! : )

2- Then delete all individuel materials, so you get only the Multi/sub object map. Then Save it (for first time, save it somewhere else, and noton the orginal file,)

3- Then open you own scene, and Merge (i merge it) the object.

4 - Then you will see the object all in white.

5- Then click: Pick material from object!

6- You will get a Multi/sub object map, with all materials.

7- You don't have to go in each map, and chose the bitmap, so that you can see the textures on the object. if you have done it right!!!.

On my scene, where i tried it, and merged it on my own scene, the materials look discusting. .. maybe because of my render settings, i have to study that.

Succes all,
