Right.. spleen venting alert......

I have just spent about 3 days chasing my tail on this so I will try and make it quick and concise.

Got nice 64 bit machine... Got Vista 64 bit loaded.. Got AutoCAD Architecture 64 bit loaded.. All nice and useable and good.

Load up Max Design 2009 64 bit.. obviously.. its all 64 bit now........

Spend 3 days trying to get it to work correctly with AA 2009 file Link manager.. Materials wont apply to multiple instances of AA 2009 objects, Mass Elements wont show up unless explicit layer information is added as well as mass element styles.. Vray frame buffer messing around, dialogue boxes flashing.. ARGHHHH!!!!!

So, I post a few queries, speak to my helpful re-seller.. (no, he really is helpful..) and find out that... wait for it, this is brilliant... the 64 bit version doesnt work like the 32 bit version, which works 100% as it should do..And I can vouch for that, as I have had to re-load the 32 bit version to find that it works fine.

You bunch of *&@* tw*ts......

I thank you....

don't get me started.

i've been teaching autocad (and 3D studio) for many years now, and i think it gets harder and harder to explain why things are the way they are in autocad.

it becomes more baffling and frustrating with every annual release.

i feel your pain, brother

So, I assume that if someone were to ask "Should I upgrade to 64bit?" your answer would be....

I remember asking my reseller of PC's back in 2003 about XP 64bit, and he basically said "We will install it, but we will not warranty it, or support it".

Nice to see things haven't changed much.

Sorry to hear about your troubles. Almost time to dust off the drafting equipment :)

Its a joke really...

All of my main 64 bit programs actually work really well.. and then you get Max Design 64, which decides its going to work diferently not to a rival program, but to the 32 bit version of itself!!

I am now trying it a different way..

It seems if you load the 32 bit version and use that for the initial file link, save the file and then open in the 64 bit version, it will name all the entities correctly.

Im not sure how it will act upon "reloads", but my next problem now is the WIBU driver has packed up, saying it "needs WIBU-BOX with 250897:...".. so I solve one problem to be presented with a new one....

I might get some work done soon....

Hey Jorge,

Yeah, thanks.. A bit of "picnic" going there with me.. I have had such a struggle with software today I sort hit a dull spot for a moment. Sorted the dongle issue now.

Its pretty much me on 32 bit now.. I can get Vray working on both. Still have a strange one thou with material asignments, but it looks like a Vray issue rather than a Max issue, so will live with it for the time being. At least Max is now spliting all my objects from AA 2009 correctly..

i can get on with some work now.. its only taken me until 5.15pm to sort it out...

Just a heads up, I've found the file link with 64bit max under XP do be a bit finicky sometimes on reload. We are writing the dwg files out of a formZ model, but just in case you run into the same problem......

Sometimes when hitting reload, it never updates to the new file, it will go through the import process, act like it's reloading then either it appears without the geometry, or it brings in the new geometry without the previously assigned materials.

My workaround for this which has been successful so far is to never overwrite the DWG files, but instead to write out a new one with a file increment number, then instead of hitting reload on the old file, reassign the file link to the new file, then hit reload and all works well. then just delete the original file linked file.... annoying but way better than reassigning your materials everytime.

Your not wrong..

I have been working on it know for a couple of hours, and I can actually get 32 bit to work as Viz 2008 did, so I am almsot happy again. But it really bugs me that if you try and search for any known issues with 64 bit Max Design, and I believe this must be a known issue, it doesnt tell you anywhere.. I could have just gone straight in at 32 bit, and left 64 alone..

i feel like getting back to my re-seller, and getting them to counter charge Autodesk for a day of my time, and see how that goes down...

Yeah.. that will teach them..!!!

Ok.. i will just say nothing and consign it the file marked "experiences".

at home I use:

Autocad adt 3.3

Max 7

vray 1.47

photoshop 7

sketchup 4

of course at work i use max design 2009, land 2007, AA 2009, and CS4 super kit and all that junk...

i've found out that:

the older versions are much more streamline and do just about the EXACT same thing.

technology should never be a fight

good advise is to always keep the old stuff that works up while you work out getting the new stuff that doesn't work right yet going.

with the news about 7's DRM today and all the XP holdouts maybe we could build a whole community around legacy ware graphics ;), because they just work like we expect hah

Quoted for agreement.

I use AutoCAD 2006 - never ever saw a reason to upgrade.

Thankfully the free DWGTrueVuw works like a champ and converts newer DWG files so I can open them.

But I am NOT a heavy AutoCAD user.

1d2d3d4d,

I agree with you. These softwares always release a new versions almost YEARLY. And a lot of new features added to each one of it (seems great but others are not so impressive).

We should also understand that upgrading is like a chain, if we upgrade one software, others would get affected and we might come to an end of changing everything. Just like now, im planning to use max design 2009, but since i am a vray user, i should also get a version that works on it (of course the latest one). That is always my problem when upgrading.

I know this message is a bit out of the topic and i am not blaming alfienoakes for upgrading. Lets just think of it before we upgrade. Just like what you've said, "they do just about the EXACT same thing".:)

Yep..

All agreed with pretty much...

My only problem was that my company upgraded all its IT, so we had new computers, servers the lot.

I loaded on Viz 2008, but never authenticated it, as I didnt need to use it straight away. Anyways, I then see the Max Design disk and think.. "now that looks good.. think I'll skip straight to it.."

Broke my own rule of always having some sort of backup to work on. I could have got Viz on line, but it was a toss up between getting the code for that, and toughing out Max Design 32 / 64 bit..

I will just wait now and see when Max design 64 bit actually works properly for my workflow, especially now that I have 32 bit running identically to how Viz used to...!
