tasi55
Hi everyone, I have been trying to resolve this matter on my own but after reading pages and pages of information I have just confused myself more. I am building myself a workstation to be used for university and doing freelance. I got my hands on a Xeon 5410 REALLY CHEAP, but I am a bit anxious as to what Motherboard to go for. Tired of rendering and working on my laptop!!!! Could anyone recommend a server board that would go well with this Xeon 5410 and for future generations. Medium price range. Thanks in advance. Any help is appreciated:)
AJLynn
Just get whatever's cheap that will work with the CPU. Future generations (e.g., the one that's releasing real soon) use a different architecture with an onboard memory controller so they'll need different motherboards. BOXXLABS
Not sure the price for what you have found but a dual Xeon 5410 system is about the same speed (for 3D rendering) as a new i7 940 system. fyi...

So are you saying that having a system with 2 x Xeon Processors I'd expect the same/similar performance out of an i7 940 (single processor)? Also, when you mentioned (for rendering) would the i7 perform faster than the Xeons in other applications? Would you have a recommendation for a motherboard? THanks so much for your help. AJLynn
It's not difficult to get an i7 to be faster than 2 of the chip you have. If you plan was to buy a second CPU with the motherboard I would certainly consider just getting one i7 and a board for it. Beware - these take different RAM.
