RevitGary
I am looking at a toturial for proxy objects. The only examples they show are modifieed AEC trees. Is it possible to make custom proxy objects. I have a nice shrub I made. A "group" of leaf planes. When I go to make a proxy of this object it doesnt select the group. it only selects one leaf. any ideas?
Justin Hunt
you can make a proxie out of any geometry, as long as it in ONE object jhv
SandmanNinja
Here are my notes on MR Proxies: Making proxies Now, creating proxies in the shipping 3ds Max 2009 is a bit of a multi-step process. I wrote a little script to simplify that, but it wasn't ready in time to make it into the shipping 2009, so you can find it here: * Download mental ray-mrProxyMake.mcr - http://www.lysator.liu.se/~zap/ad/mental%20ray-mrProxyBake.mcr * Launch max, and on the MaxScript menu choose "Run Script" and pick the file. By doing this, it should now have installed itself. * Now open your "Customize" memory, the "Customize User Interface" * Choose the "Quads" tab * On the left, choose the category "mental ray" * In the list that appears, you'll find a "Convert Object(s) to mental ray Proxy". Make sure the one with the plural "s" on "Object(s)", if you find one without s it is the shipping one which is not so fun. * Drag it to a quad menu of your choice - done! Now you should be able to right-click an object, and get a "Convert Object(s) to mental ray Proxy" option.

SandmanNinja
Mmm.. I did the steps as above and I can right-click any object and I get that option. Did you re-start Max? not sure if you have to, but... I am using 3ds max 2009 Design - what version of Max are you using?

rustylamante
Hey SandmanNinja, I installed this script following your steps and it comes up fine on the quad menu when i right click. First i tested it by creating a few boxes in a new scene and it seemed to work fine, but when i try to save the proxy i want (ie cars) i get a mental ray error: DB 0.0 fatal 041052: accessing unknown tag 0xa40. Could it be a problem relating to all the different textures? Or because the car is in so many separate pieces? Thanks in advance.
