davidarcila
Hello, i didn't post this in other threads because it doesn't have to do with architectural rendering, but still i know there are lots of people here that can help me with this problem. I'm modelling a small soda can using 3ds max, i started the can as a cylinder and that part is ready. But when i get to the top part things get more complicated, because i don't know how to approach the modelling of the pull tab. I tried using splines and then extruding them, but the issue here is that i don't have enough subdivisions for the turbosmooth to work. How would you approach this? Thanks
SandmanNinja
just keep it a spline. Looks like you have the basic shape there. Just extrude the splines to give it some thickness and you should be right.
Ky Lane
I think youre trying to round off the edges? This is where my modelling skills get stretched. Personally, Id convert it to a poly, grab all the outer edges and camfer them. This may help : http://www.worldoftrainz.com/Pages/TutorialsTRS/3dsRadiusEdgeTutTRS.htm Edited February 27, 2009 by Ky Lane
shaneis
Why not just do a simple low-poly box model, do a simple bevel around all edges and then convert to sub-d's or whatever the Max equivalent is...turbosmooth?
anton
You have enough subdivisions, but the problem is with the top and bottom polygons that have a very bad topology. For turbosmooth to work you need a somewhat clean model, as close as possible to having only quads. I would build this using an organic modeling technique. Build one polygon and shift+drag the edges to create new polygons. This way you create a low poly model that approximates the tab, then you extrude it and add the turbosmooth. Justin Hunt
Poly box model with turbo smooth and a bend for fun not perfect by should be a good start jhv
