Boing
my installation of max 2009 64bit seems to hang at this point for about a minute and a half on our render farm but on my desktop it loads within seconds of this point. I’m trying to narrow down the possible reasons why, could someone tell me what exactly max is doing at this point? any feedback is much appreciated, thanks
quizzy
Unregistered version???
luckymutt
When you say "this point of installation," do you mean just starting Max? And when you refer to your render farm, are you refering to Max opening when a job is submitted? If so, a possible explanation is that Max on the servers is not simply opening the file. When a job is submitted via Backburner, Max will save the file, zip it, place the zipped file buried in temp folder in your "documents and settings", then tell the manager to fire up Max on the servers, then send the zipped scene through the manager to each machine where it is unzipped and finally loaded. Boing
Unregistered version??? this installation is on a render farm, to be used as a render node, so it doesn't require a license, it's a legitamate version though, i work for a major architectural firm so we don't use dogy software. i've tried borrowing a license to see if this is whats holding the install but it made no difference. With 2009 vray takes about 2 minutes to boot up before it starts to render, for an animation it's not an issue as it only boots once at the start but if you're sending lots of little one-offs it's a pain to wait 3 mins for a 50 sec render. Whilst looking into the issue i realised that booting a full version of max on the blades also takes about 2 mins whilst booting a full version of 2008 takes 10 secs or so, they both race through the bootup but 2009 stalls at the point above and holds for 1.5 mins. i would just chalk it up to another stunning "advance" in technology, a general 2009 thing but on my desktop max 2009 boots just as quickly as 2008 so it must be a setup issue. i just can't figure out whats different in the two setups to cause this. Stephen Thomas
You could try copying your maxstart file across from your desktop to the render node and see if that helps. You'll find it in My Documents\3dsmax\scenes.
quizzy
maybe you have network paths in the ini files pointing to plugins or something?

Boing
maybe you have network paths in the ini files pointing to plugins or something? quizzy, i don't know how to check that but i did try it with all the plugins removed from the plugin folder and it made no difference. quizzy
I've just checked in max2008 (dont have max2009) and here the thing it does the last before showing all the goodies is: initializing maxscripts and initializing the GUI... you could also check in task manager if there is any activity on the processors during this stall.... thats what I would do first..
