Jonny English
Help! I've lost my Layer Selection drop-down list and can't seem to find it again. I still have my layer palette, but no quick access drop down list...any ideas?
HeDaCoM
maybe you have to customize the toolbar again and add it.. or load the default UI again.

xgarcia
Max5 right? This is a known bug. http://www.cgarchitect.com/ubb/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=11;t=000249 This has been discussed before also at Discreet's forum (http://support.discreet.com/webboard/wbpx.dll/read?71859,9e#71859). The only solution I found is to keep a shortcut of your maxstart.cui file (found in ../3dsmax5/UI/maxstart.cui) on your desktop. Everytime you close Max, open this file. Hit CRTL+F and search for layers. You sould find something like this: [Layers] Rank=0 SubRank=0 Hidden=1 FRect=100 -50 132 -21 DRect=0 39 40 393 DRectPref=2147483647 2147483647 -2147483648 -2147483648 DPanel=4 Tabbed=0 TabCt=0 CurTab=-1 CurPos=16 461 80 1066 139 CType=1 ToolbarRows=1 ToolbarType=16 ItemCount=12 Item0=2|0|0|31|3|647394|layer_current`Layers|0|0|"Set Current Layer"|"Layer current"|-1| Item1=2|0|0|31|3|647394|layer_props`Layers|0|0|"Layer Properties"|"Layer Properties"|-1| Item2=5|240|240|50502|0|19|2|1344276755|ComboBox|p}F,Ò Item3=2|0|0|31|3|647394|layer_match`Layers|0|0|"Match Object's Layer"|"Layer match"|-1| Item4=2|0|0|31|3|647394|isolate_layer`Layers|0|0|"Isolate Object's Layer"|"Isolate Layer"|-1| Item5=2|0|0|31|3|647394|unisolate_layer`Layers|0|0|"Undo Last Isolate Layer"|"Undo Isolate Layer"|-1| Item6=2|0|0|31|3|647394|layer_off`Layers|0|0|"Turn Object's Layer Off"|"Layer Off"|-1| Item7=2|0|0|31|3|647394|all_layers_on`Layers|0|0|"Turn All Layers On"|"All On"|-1| Item8=2|0|0|31|3|647394|layer_lock`Layers|0|0|"Lock Object's Layer"|"Layer Lock"|-1| Item9=2|0|0|31|3|647394|layer_unlock`Layers|0|0|"Unlock Object's Layer"|"Layer Lock"|-1| Item10=2|0|0|31|3|647394|layer_select`Layers|0|0|"Select Layer"|"Select Layer"|-1| Item11=2|0|0|31|3|647394|prop_by_layer`Layers|0|0|"Set properties ByLayer"|"ByLayer"|-1| Item 2 is what is screwed up by MAX eveytime it closes. See the extra code added at the end after "|". Delete whatever is there. This way the next time you open Max your layer drop down will be there. This bug really ticked me off considering the price of the software. But in Max6 it is gone, plus the layer manager is much better in 6. Anyhow, this is the only solution (other than buying Max6) I found for this bug in Max5. Someone suggested to make the maxstart.cui file read-only but this results in an error msg from max when you try to close. Plus it doesn't work. To Jeff: Would it be possible to sticky this topic in the 3dsmax forum? [ November 04, 2003, 09:39 AM: Message edited by: xgarcia ]
