problem with vray speed in vista

Recommended Posts

HELLO THERE,

i upgraded my pc from an xp pack to vista ultimate

in both sides ( xp - vista ) i am using 3d studio max 9 with vray version 1.5

the problem is that exactly the same scene in xp takes arround 25 minutes to finish the render and in vista more than 1:30 hours

i just cannot understand what the problem might be

my hardware specs are :

2 dual amd opteron 280 , 4 g ram ,graphics card g force 9800 cx2

please could anybody give an opinion ?

are there any settings for vray for vista to make it run like runs in xp ?

thanks

If you have a decent amount of proxies or displacement in your scene, this would point to the issue being a memory problem. If this is the case, you can simply adjust your Dynamic memory limit. If it is over the default(400MB) try lowering it a little and see if it has an effect on render times, if so, you could try to just re-balance this setting. Or...

Vista uses a lot more RAM than XP by default, and with only 4GB, I could see it causing some noticable differences. Google "disable superfetch" and run through the steps outlined, that may get you back to where you were with XP.

It looks like your simplest options would be to invest a little in memory or revert to XP. Moving forward, the RAM would definitely serve you better unless you are looking to completely replace your system in the near future. You have obviously already put up the money to move forward with Vista Ultimate so I would say you may be better off investing in memory to take advantage of your purchase. Depending on your system, you should be able to move to 8GB for under $100 US.

I faced this problem last year, 3ds max 9 had a lot of compatibility issues with Vista, autodesk tried to fix it by launching sp2 and productivity boosters but i tried them and it didn't solve the problem. 3ds max kept crashing and rendering time was high. 3ds max 2008 doesn't create any problem with Vista.
