I have a job in retail, which although I don't really like it I am at the moment grateful to have. When the economy finally emerges from the 7th level of hell I would like to look for a job doing Arch Viz for a firm. What I need to know is what kind of educational background would I need to go along with a strong portfolio to make that happen. A B.A. in Architecture? Digital design? Interior Design? Thanks

If you are looking to do strickly vizualization work, then there really isn't any formal education that is required. It would be extremeing helpful to have the ability to read drawings from an architect. If you are looking to do more, then some interior design or architectural design would be helpful.

Having an architecture background helps for sure. You have a better understanding of size and scale of buildings and the various parts and pieces. Studying furniture design and interior design also helps. With that said, you really don't need a specific background to get started in the field. However, I know a lot of architecture companies prefer to have people with an architectural background for their in house 3d people. Overall, if you have talent then you should be set. This field is so varied in general. Knowing architecture, landscape architecture, interior design, furniture design, product design, photography, lighting design, computer programming, cinematography, etc... all help.
