Windows 64 XP or Vista?

Recommended Posts

you're running dual core Xeon 5110's. Nice for their day, but those are getting pretty old.

Depending on your motherboard/chipset, you may be able to put in dual 5300 (quadcore) Xeons - probably cost you about $700 - $1000 (if you can find them)

Id' suggest a new system. A new single socket I7 based system with a i940 CPU (quadcore) would be about twice as fast as your current system for rendering. You would probably spend about $1000. Maybe less.

(that would be for a build-you-own, of course)

Ok...Thanks for your suggestions, since i'm pretty serious on starting as a freelancer here, i guess i should consider a new machine.. I really thought that i could upgrade mine but maybe i'll keep it for other stuff..But since you're telling me that it would probably cost that much..A new machine is probably the best option

Thanks alot again!;)

upgrading your current machine is probably an option for you if you don't have the funds for a new system.

If you can put 8 gigs of RAM in that machine and load up XP64, you will probably get rid of your memory errors and should be able to work without crashing...it won't be much "faster" than it is now, but at least you will be able to do your work...

Cheers,

Adam

The XPS is a nice little machine -

If you are considering spending the extra dough on a dual CPU Xeon system, you should wait a couple of weeks. The new "Nahalem" based Xeons will ship on April 1st. Don't buy a Xeon 54xx system now. It will be instantly obsolete.

OK...sounds good..Do you think those new Nahalem would be better than the xps serie? I'm willing to wait a bit and upgrade my ram and os, keep this machine for renderings or to use at home..and buy a new one in a couple of weeks...

Thanks!;)

I prefer and suggest to use xp64-bit. I have tried vista 64. Although it has DX10 but it also conflicts with DX applications such as max etc. If you want to run your project smooth and dont want to lose your work and stuck, just believe on xp-64. Vista 64 is only for kids not for professional. It is more than a bug for professionals. and it will make you what u want to be so hate vista and go for XP

Im sorry to hear that the hardware you use isnt professional enough to use Vista. Im running a 8 core mac pro with Vista64, and it runs dreamy. No issues, no crashes, no hiccups, no dramas.

Or maybe Im magic?

Any suggestions on how to "tune" Vista 64? We will be upgrading our machines later on today and tomorrow. I have never really used Vista.

boom! i love Google.

**Oh, and I don't recommend spend any money on the Windows "Optimizer" utilities that are out there. All the changes you need to make can be done easily by hand.

turn off the user account control to stop those stupid popup boxes every time you do anything.

Change your windows style to windows classic.

Turn off all the windows aero stuff

Turn off that fetcher service which eats up all your ram within about 2 mins of startup...

Thats pretty much all i did plus defrag your system every so often.

Thanks for those links Adam! Will definately have a look through some blogs this weekend.
