Wireless LAN

Recommended Posts

Hi Friends,

I do think I know about computers, but I have to admit wireless gadgets puzzle me.

I have my house where I live and do most of my work, and an office where I go play with my toys, that I rented to escape from my lovely but always screaming kids (there are no parks here to let them out), it is 250-300 meters away from my house (less than 1000 foot). Both buildings are 8 storeys high, I could put equipment on the roof, I am not certain that there is a line of sight (it seems there is a huge building between them, take out that building and I can see my office building directly.

I have wired switches. What equipment do I need to connect my office to my home so that I can transfer files easily?

Thanks.

Why not leave your computer at home connected and then use FTP or Remote Desktop to transfer the files? As long as both systems are connected to the internet, you can transfer files. No need for wireless on a roof I think.

that is a great idea, but sadly in Lebanon, despite the fact than an employed architect makes $1000/month, there is a limit on monthly internet download and 5GB of internet traffic cost about $85, and I always go above my limit, usually my monthly internet bill is $150. So for day to day use downloading large PSD files from my home or office it is going to be too expensive and slow. But I will do it if I have to just to monitor my renderfarm...But I am looking for somethign to help me download files that range from 1MB to 500MB sometimes.

Thanks

As long as you can get the range you can just connect to your network wirelessly with a normal WAP and a repeater antennae. I don't know your exact distance, but there are special wireless repeater antenna that you can buy and connect to the antennae ports on the WAP or special WAP that have extended range. I know Cisco sell a few products that cater to this application, but like anything Cisco, it's not cheap:

These are the types of antennae you are looking for: http://www.gnswireless.com/WiFi_antennas.htm

I've used a 12dbi antenna before to expand a wifi range but it fell short of the manufactures promised range. There's one on the site Jeff posted.... says it's range is 3000ft but I doubt you'll get that out of it.

My uncle does sports photography and we would go out to tournaments and setup his trailer for printing photo's on site and he would carry a laptop around the fields with him to upload all the pics from his camera directly from the golf cart that he drove around.

Point of story -> We put the antenna on top of a 12ft. pole on top of the trailer so it was about 20ft high in the middle of a parking lot with no obstructions...... max transfer range was normally about 600ft. Not bad gave us about the distance equal to the length of two football fields. but that's a bit short of the distance you're trying to get.

Sounds like you might need a repeater halfway between the two access points.
