I'd say for the best results you'll have to trace it - either with splines in max, or in a higher resolution image in photoshop to get clean smooth lines. This was the best I could quickly do with displacement. I enlarged it in photoshop and did a levels adjustment and painted out some spots. Its not bad, but you can still see the irregular edges.

Just to see I ran Live Trace in Illustrator on it at default B&W settings and it came out fine...

thank you very much, i'm not ilustrator user, i use max, but thank you enyway, I think it's good idea to start some practice in ilustrator as well.
