Light inconsistency - Vray

I've got a really strange problem that I hope someone on here may be able to help me with!

I've set up a series of standard (free) spot lights within my scene in 3ds max using V-Ray DEMO 1.50 SP2.

There are two specific problems which I have encountered:

1: When configuring the viewport shading to 'best' it is clear that some of my lights are not emitting light even though they are 'instances' of previous lights which were working! (no I haven't got the lights hidden in any objects - I deliberatley lowered the lights beneath the fittings)

2: If all my lights show that they are emitting light in the viewport, they sometimes do not render correctly. A classic example of the strangeness of this situation is that i set up an animation of 100 frames at 800 x 600 pixels cirulating around the atrium of my building. I rendered the first 25 frames in one go with the lights acting consistently (even though some of them were not on they did behave consistently through each frame). I began the animation again from frame 26 through to frame 34 and all of the lights behaved differently again. This is very odd!

Possible reasons that I have thought about are:

Vray can't handle too many lights

Vray is trying to be clever by turning off lights it thinks it doesn't need

My model polygon count is too high (its 3 million)

Vray has some sort of personal problem with me (this is the least likely)

I've tried standard lights, vray lights, photometric lights and lights imported from evermotion archinteriors. All of which act inconsistently

Please help - this is very annoying! I've attached some images to try and illustrate the problem. I've placed a self-glow material to the bulb of each spot fitting where there should also be a light being emitted and isn't! Each image is in a slightly different position but with the same quantity of lights and the same settings.

Thanks

Sorry, but your problem is entirely lack of user experience, you simply need more experience.

Vray can handle a lot of stuff very efficiently, and quickly, and is actually more forgiving in terms of sloppiness than any other engine on the market. I say this not because your scene is messed up, but because you possible reasons for it being messed up suggest this.
