leoviale
Hi guys, i have a little issue with Vray Translucency, I'm trying to create a cool water shader, like tropical water, using transluceny represent the color depth from that kind of water. The problem is that i can't find any kind of subdivs for translucency, and the water effects gets very noisy. I tryed raising the refraction subdivs, but it has no effect on it. Here's a screen of the render test and the shader's option. Edited March 20, 2009 by leoviale
Stephen Thomas
Umm, refraction subdivs maybe? Have you tried just using fog instead of translucency? Translucency is usually used when you are looking at an object which is lit from behind. In the case of liquid that would be like a semi-opaque liquid in a glass for instance. I think fog is more appropriate in this situation.
leoviale
If u r referring to Fog color, i used it, check the material option capture i added, and i also used fog there. Also i tried with refraction subdivs but it has no effect. There's got to be a way, i just can't find it.
kbotnen
Have you tried switch to hybrid model? As "Soft (water) model - this model is mostly for compatibility with older V-Ray versions (1.09.x)" http://www.spot3d.com/vray/help/150SP1/material_params.htm "Refraction" ... "Subdivs - controls the quality of glossy refractions. Lower values will render faster, but the result will be more noisy. Higher values take longer, but produce smoother results. This parameter also controls the quality of the translucent effect, if on (see below)." So according to the help files your problem is located somewhere else? Maybe uping the lights subdiv? Let us know about your findings -K-
WAcky
I recall seeing a screenshot of some water made with the new vray fog But i dont know where i saw it. It may have been on the chaos group forums. Either way it looked awesome.
leoviale
Hi guys, well, i made some more testing. The noise problem is still there, i tried also a non translucent water, buy from my perspective, as i saw this water, the translucency way its like how it works in real life. Here i leave 2 tests, the first one with translucency (hybrid mode) and the second without it. If someone still knows how to control the translucency subdivs or something to get rid of noise, please let me know. I tried with reflection and refraction subdivs, but has no effect, also tried rising the primary light source diffuses subdivs but has no effect either. Stephen Thomas
Looking good! Could you post your image sampler settings as this is probably the source of your noise. Assuming you're using Adaptive DMC you should uncheck the 'Use DMC sampler thresh.' box, Min subdivs=2 Max subdivs=5 and set the Color Threshold to 0.01 as a starting point. You can raise the min and max values and lower the color threshold if needed to eliminate the noise problems.
leoviale
Well guys, here r almost the final images, (still some adjustments to do), but almost done. At the end i just get rid of the translucency, but i will still do some testing with it, because i think it's more realistic how it works for tropical water. Sorry about the watermark, i had some problems with some guys who stole some images, so i had to add it, and i already had those images uploaded, and was a little bit lazy to open photoshop, export and upload again without watermarks .
