Macca23
im rendering a scene where ive got quite a bit of grass around my house. Ive got a few small flag stones as a pathway across the grass. I can render the scene without the grass, then render the grass seperately, but when i try to render the scene with everything in it it renders for about a minute then max just closes. Has anyone else had a problem like this? Im rendering with vray and using max 9. Thanks
Arnold Sher
yeah...happens to us all the time...would love to know how to get around... Low res usually is okay but as soon as one goes above 2000px it bombs like there is no tomorrow... We actually most of the time just paint that in photoshop as part of post work but would love to be able to do in max.
Macca23
thats gunna be so annyoying, causes more effort to photoshop it all together, why cant it just render it lol
Dave Buchhofer
watch in the task manager, see the amount of ram max is using. (Hint: turn on the VM Size column.) does it crash at a certain point of ram usage? I'm gonna guess you're seeing this at 1.75gb... you can adjust vray to allow more ram to be allocated to the dynamic geometry also (fur/displacements/proxys), check the help file on dynamic memory. does the crash seem to happen when the buckets get to a certain place on the scene? Pictor
Sounds to me like you're running out of memory. if you're generating grass from a single sided plane then use 2D mapping (landscape) option in the vray displacemnt modifier - uses less memory than the 3D option. Start with bitmap resolution set at 1024 - 1600 as this should be enough to get decent results. If you're running 32bit max with 3gig or less of ram try setting the default geometry (vray>settings>system) to dynamic and set the dynamic memory limit to 800mb or thereabouts, it will render slower but shouldn't crash as it off loads geometry data on the fly. hope this helps! Dave Buckley
i suggest you all check out the latest vismasters tip of the week i'l give you a clue, this is the title of one of yesterdays posted tips: "V-Ray Displacement Grass Pass" i think its right up your street I'd love to post the full tip but not too sure if this would make Jeff a little unhappy. Anyhow, its a great weekly newsletter that everyone should be subscribed to
Macca23
it crashes at 1.7gb. It doesnt even get to the first black square on the render, crashes during displacement part of rendering. How do you assign more memory to it?
