janmazan
I am added a material to a roof which is a texture of play clay tiles. I have a diffuse map and a bump map which make the material look good but I want the tiles to appear stepped to add reality especially at junctions etc??? I know that I need to use a map in the displacement channel but what map can I use to achieve this effect? Apologies if this is simple, I am a student! Thanks in advance Jan
Tommy L
I would recommend modeling over displacement in this instance.
janmazan
I have been modelling the tiles in the past but this case is for vertical tile hanging and I do not feel that modelling vertical tile hanging is efficient?
janmazan
and also if I model the tiles then I can not use the textures which I have and they work really well?
Tommy L
Displacement can be power hungry and inefficient. It can also look like crap if its not done right. I would model it and use a procedural material. Its easier to advise if you have a progress image. If you want to try displacement then just stick your bump map into the slot. What render engine are you using? Is it for animation or still? Do you have a farm?
Brian Smith
I agree with Tom. Here's a chapter on creating roofs...should help. http://3dats.com/images/tutorials/Book2-sample.pdf
janmazan
thanks guys I do see what your saying and as I say I have been modelling the tiles in the past as I have the book brian! I have just seen several examples of displacement being used quite well. I am using Vray as my render engine but I think I will stick with using the modelling method for now! Cheers Jan
alfa smyrna
You can model few tiles and render z-depth channel so you create a displacement map out of this geometry. When you have your map, you can turn it into a seamless texture in Photoshop and use as a displacement map on your roof after UWmapping your roof.
