Kriss_J_W
I’m relatively new to 3DSM and I’ve been working on a major project for a portfolio for some time now though I’ve started to have “issues” with it… It’s gotten to the point that 3DSM6 slows when I want to do so little as draw a line. When I apply textures from the materials library it won’t render them (rendering any textures that I have imported myself); it will go so far as to do a partial render and then, at the point at which the texture/s from the library are introduced, it freezes the render. I’ve been trying to reduce the strain upon 3DSM6 by attaching objects together (eg. two separate parts of what is to be one whole object) but it doesn’t seem to be doing any good. Like I said, I’m quite new to 3DSM as I graduated from University not too long ago and I’m still learning about it in more detail. I've no idea why it won't render materials from its own materials libraries; it seems to work fine if I use bitmaps, just not the materials files... If it’s of any help the PC I use has a 2.20 GHz Quad-Core Processor, 4 GB of RAM and a 456 GB hard disk. The file size is approximately 38 MB. If anyone can shed any light on this matter it would be very, very much appreciated.
Kriss_J_W
Thank you for your reply, Libertycityanimation. are you doing this in a new scene or in the currant scene? if you restart max then it should a lot faster. I'm doing this in the current scene. Whenever I start a new file it is fine which suggests that the PC is struggling with memory, trying to construct everything within the project file I'm currently working on. on some programs you wont be able to render the texure you have to re-add it to your model(s) and make sure you have show in viewport on. My model doesn't have any materials assigned to it at the moment; everything is in its blank, default state. The problem arises whenever I add a material from the libraries... The problem is that I need to render glass within my scene and there's no way around using the materials libraries for that. However, as I said, the problem with the renderer freezing does not apply exclusively to the glass material; it doesn't like rendering any material from the libraries. how big is the file? can you attach an image to this site The file is approximately 38 MB and the PC I use has a 2.20 GHz Quad-Core Processor, 4 GB of RAM and a 456 GB hard disk. I've no images of the project as of yet, but I can try to upload some later.
Kriss_J_W
okay if your pc is struggling i would run your spyware and remove all of them from your system if you have any spyware Do you know about MS configuration? If not then go to start run type in Msconfig all one word. then click on ok this will bring up the ms configuration box. go to the second to last tab called startup uncheck (untick) all the files apart from your virus checker and spyware checker. click on apply then ok your pc will ask you to restart your computer restart it and it will boot up as normal. To access any of your messenagers just click on them. I shall try this, though will have to do so later today at around noon; I've an early start today. what is your render vray, Mr (metal ray) scanline? if you start a new scene and then create a box and apply material to your box and then render it does it render with the material? if your using vray then i don't use vray i use MR or scanline so i cannot help you if you use vray. After having installed 3DSM6 I did not alter any existing settings and so the render method is, I assume, a default setting. Which of the mentioned it is, I'm not sure... I think it's scanline... Again, thanks for the help. I'll look into what you mentioned and will reply again here asap.
Kriss_J_W
before you brought max did you read the system requirements? here they are Pentium III 500MHz, 512MB of RAM , 500MB of hard disk space, Windows 2000 or XP, 1024x768 display, CD-ROM. Well, let's just say that I didn't purchase 3DSM6... Someone I know gave it to me as they had a copy going. I think you may need to upgrade your hardware and Components here are mine 3ds max used currently using max 9 (7, 8) windows xp sp2 512 memory 40 and 80 GB hard drives sis mirage 3 VGA Card Asus motherboard Thanks for that. I'll look into my PC specs in a while; gotta take care of a few things first. I'll reply here later... ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Okay, I've had a quick chance to check my specs and they are as follows... I use 3DSM6 on a system using Windows Vista with a 2.20 GHz Quad-Core Processor, 4 GB of RAM, 357 GB free of a 455 GB hard drive (C: Drive), 1.41 GB free of a 1.46 GB secondary hard drive (S: Drive), an ATI Radeon X1200 Series VGA Card that has 1599 MB Total Available Graphics Memory and 128 MB System Video Memory. The 3DSM6 file is approximately 38 MB in size. Is that relatively large for 3DSM6? Edited April 4, 2009 by Kriss_J_W Addition to post.
Kriss_J_W
Hopefully it's the real deal and not a copy of max and you have a license for it. If not your going to get into a lot of trouble if autodesk finds out. It is the real thing, and yes, I do have a license for it; I don't wanna even think about being busted for using dodgy software! If you scene keeps freezing when you add texture to it then it maybe the ini file have been corrupted. If those files are corrupted, how would I go about correcting that? By re-installing the software? did you create that box and apply the texture to it and render it did the box come out okay. no crashes/freeze? if not then your scene maybe to big. No, the box won't render once I add a texture from the material libraries. It will if I add one of my own, or one of the .jpegs from the 3DSM6 maps folder on my C: Drive, but not it I use the Get Material function in the Material Editor. have you added any service packs to your max? No, I've not. How would I go about doing that? The official site...? It mite be your OS i hear that vista does not like max that much. If you have a friend with xp on his computer i would try rendering your scene on his/her computer and see if it render out ok. If it does then you know it's vista. Hm... I don't know anyone else in the area with 3DSM; I got it whilst at University.
Kriss_J_W
I downloaded the Service Pack, but now the software won't run at all. It says it's initializing but only gets so far as the file at "3dsmax6\StdPlugs\cmbtex.dlt" I've uninstalled 3DSM6 and tried reinstalling, but it still won't run now. Kriss_J_W
I've tried a system restore already, but it's still not running... I know it makes no sense, but, well... That's what's happening.
Kriss_J_W
There's no way to remove the packs; they don't even appear in the Add/Remove list. I can't see any way around this...
Kriss_J_W
Yeah, I do. I'll send it to you in a private message, though I'm not gonna be online for a short while.
Tommy L
If you have a clean install of a licensed version of max and it doesnt open, its not a problem with max. There is a problem with your operating system or hardware. I would suggest you re-install windows.
Kriss_J_W
And as I said to you before you called me a "British ****", I appreciated your help very much but I'm not gonna let someone I don't know remotely access my computer...
