landrvr1
Just made the upgrade to Max Design 2009. Gotta say, it's the worst upgrade experience ever. I won't get into it, but I loath this version more than any other, lol. It's the finest example yet of AutoDesk fixing stuff that wasn't broken. One of my biggest issues is the Select By Name dialog. I want the old, legacy style but cannot seem to get it to work. With 2008 I had no trouble changing the correct CurrentDefaults.ini file info: (SelectByNameUsesSceneExplorer=0) 0 being the magic number for Legacy change. I've followed a number of threads over at the AutoDesk forum, but absolutely nothing I've tried seems to work. I've changed every single .ini file I could. Doesn't work. I started a new thread over at the AD forum, but thought I'd reach out to you folks. Has anyone successfully changed 2009 to the legacy picker? I hit the Select By Name icon, get the Select From Scene dialog (why? lol. Stupid.), but it never reverts to legacy. Any help would be appreciated. I'm going insane over this. ps. The fact that the dialog icon is Select By Name, but the window that pops up is called Select From Scene, bugs me to no end.
Crazy Homeless Guy
Yes, you can change it in the 2009 version, perhaps try turning off off user profiles, then turning off scene explorer. Also, Autodesk spent time fixing the speed of scene explorer in the 2010 version. i haven't used it a lot, but from the little I have used, it runs a lot smoother. Fran
I disabled the Scene Explorer plugin and that brought back the old dialog.
landrvr1
Fran, that was exactly it. You nailed it. Pulled the plug (pun intended), and problem solved. Thanks much. I never would have known that was the culprit, and funny how that move wasn't mentioned in any of the AutoDesk threads I went through. Tnx again. You've saved my sanity. For at least a few days. Fran
There was a thread about Max taking forever to load and someone suggested disabling unneeded plugins. I went to town disabling stuff and inadvertantly solved that annoying problem with the selection dialog.
rmccoy
After reading your post. I think I experienced the same problem. my solution was to change my hotkeys to what you see below. It gives you what you used to see (much better in my opinion)
landrvr1
Hmm. Interesting. We now have: Select By Name Select By Scene Selection Floater Select Objects (legacy) etc. I'm just not versed enough in Max to try and figure out all the differences and stuff (even though I've been using the program for over a decade). Shameful laziness on my part. Or ignorant bliss (until I run into an issue, that is). For instance, before I did the legacy fix in 2009, when you click on the default Select By Name icon, the Select By Scene box would pop up. Or something like that. *shrug* dunno. Makes little sense to me. And the amount of default.ini files that the 2009 install dumps into your machine is staggering. At least it was on mine. They are all over the place, and include some for MentalRay, Vray, 2 for VIZ installs, etc etc .
