Net Rendering

Hi

I am thinking of linking my laptops and my mac (booted on windows) together to try and do net rendering, my question is do the other computers need to have max and vray on them? Or dose it just utilize the processor? And dose any one know of a good tutorial on networking computers?

Thanks

You have to load the unlicensed version of Max on every computer as well as any plugins you use to create the scene. You should designate one of your computers to run the management software as well as be the file server for all your maps. You can also have all the nodes save their files to this computer.

If you are using Vray, which your post suggests, than you need to have Vray Spawner service on your render nodes (other computers helping out) and Max. Vray Spawner can be installed by installing Vray on each of those computers but during the install, you specify that it is for a render node, not a full install. You will see what I mean when you do the install.

You will need Max on each of the machines, but they don't have to be fully licensed versions either.

In Max, if you look under help in the menu pulldown and enter a key word of backburner, the first entry will run you through the process for setting up network rendering.

if you are using vray and mainly rendering stills, you should look up distributed rendering.

best to set the Mac off to the side, though, as none of the applications are supported on it.

I suppose uou could run bootcamp/softwindows or some other emulation frontend and setup your drive mapping as logical drives etc. but, imo, you would be better off in the long run by focusing your energy/time/resources toward building a cheap PC render slave instead.
