ZFact
Hi; A friend of mine was telling me about the new drape tool for sketchup. Imagine modelling up some contours - like a mountain. You then want to model up a road and let the road follow the contours of the hill. The drape tool allows you to model the road in plan and then kind of apply the plan view to the hill or contours and the software does the rest. It actually cuts out the geometry in the hillside and alters the contours of the road to fall into place with the hill. I would usually create a road in plan view then set the road above the hill and drag the vertices down until they landed on the hill and work my way along the road shaping it into place. Perhaps I am doing this wrong but... how do you guys do this in cinema or does cinema have a similar drape tool. Cheers Z

ZFact
Thanks Steve; so simple! Is there anyway to do this with a polygon or editable loft? Imagine you want the road to drape but it isnt made up of splines...
Frosty
Not that I'm aware of. 3 suggestions I would make are: 1) Project the spline down and then use it with an extrude nurbs. This will have mixed results depending on the severity of the terrain. 2) Use cloth to "drape" the road over the terrain - this can use polys but I have no idea how well it will work. 3) Extrude to road up through the terrain and do a boolean split - this would likely be my method of choice.
