Do not write an "I, Me, My" letter. Example. I am looking for such and such a job. I can have done this. I can do that.

Get the point?

What you have done and can do is important. But put it into the context of the perspective employer.

Example

This is what I can do for you. My past experience doing this will benefit your company in this way... etc. Gear your letter towards their needs and how you can fill them.

Just yesterday I had the opportunity to look through some resumes/portfolios delivered to our office. I'm not in management so I really don't care about the cover letter.

Content is king to me. And I'm a sucker for packaging. Cool paper and foldy out bits, nice binding and shiny things......oh yea, that's the stuff.

Personally, my portfolio is a DVD package. A coil bound booklet made from 4"X6" photo prints and a DVD containing slide shows and video/animation work. Everything is custom made, including printed DVDs, with a very high attention to detail and quality. 5"x7" prints fit better, but are radically more expensive. Each unit cost me about $10 to produce with printed discs, cases, booklets and case inserts. I left one at every studio I visited. "Leave behinds" work!
