Hi Guys,

Im new to this site and was hoping somone could help me out with a gamma issue...or at least I think its a gamma issue. I was playing around with the gamma settings the other day (set between 1.7 - 1.8) Rendered an image (as jpeg) I am working on, opened it outside of Max and its was VERY dark. The only way I can save a jpeg anything close to the rendered image within the max render window now is if if I overide the systems default gamma and match it to the setting (between 1.7 - 1.8) but its is nowhere near as sharp as the image inside the render window in Max.

Im sure i have just got a box unchecked or something but its driving me crazy and I was hoping someone here could offer a suggestion

i'm guessing you figured out the reason for it being dark (Customize>Preferences>Gamma and LUT)

the reason it isn't as sharp is because you are losing quality as soon as you save to jpeg. Compression is an issue, so if you want to maintain the quality, you need to save to a lossless image format such as TIFF or TARGA

Set the output gamma under Gamma and LUT settings to 2.2, or just render to a 16- or 32-bit file format and correct the gamma in post. Max defaults (because of legacy settings that were commonly used in older versions) to saving render output in 1.0 gamma, which is not standard in Windows, and if you view a 1.0 file on a 2.2 system it will appear very dark.
