isaac_cm
Hello, I work now on a small room scene and I have walls, windows, one door and when I start to make the sofa at high resolution I find Max become very slow it even display other polygons as square while I model !! I have 1 GB ram for now I know it is a bit low but I recall that when I used to use Maya I did not experience a problem like this. any advice to make Max work more faster ? Thanks
Derek Forreal
use 'Alt+Q' to isolate selection when you're working on a single object. how are you creating the sofa? low poly and turbosmooth? if so have viewport iterations on 1 and a higher number (2-3) for render only. work with turbosmooth off as much as possible. when you finish working on the sofa, turn off viewport turbosmooth and leave on only for rendertime. Crazy Homeless Guy
Add more RAM, it is cheap. 1 gig isn't going to let you do much of anything.
isaac_cm
derek forreal Yes, I use low poly then turbo smooth - does it really take alot of RAM ? is there any other better scenario ? Crazy Homeless Guy current MBoard wont let me, I need to make major upgrades.
Greg Law
Try creating a box and then scale it twenty times, or as many undo's you have setup. I was reading the other day these undo's basicly store your operations in memory, so if you do a big operation you have a lot of memory locked up. So by doing a few simple operations, like I mentioned, it can release a lot of memory for you to use.
sagartotal3ds
Increase the ram
Derek Forreal
Yes, I use low poly then turbo smooth - does it really take alot of RAM ? is there any other better scenario ? like the others said, it can take up RAM depending on scene size, undos etc, but what's probably slowing you even more is your graphics card. what card do you have? when you switch on turbo smooth, the number of polys goes up significantly so your GPU needs to be able to handle the poly count otherwise you won't be able to move around in 3d. better scenario? not really, when you start to model highpoly or lowpoly/meshsmooth, your poly count must increase and so must your pc specs. all i can suggest is that you model the sofa in a seperate file, keep turbosmooth off as much as possible and switch on when you need to check progress (see previous post). also, use adaptive degradation (shortcut = O (letter O)) which will help when navigating the 3d view. when you finish, merge the sofa into your main file and in its properties, check 'display as box'. however, if you do this regularly and you want to model this way, you really need to think about getting better hardware. what's the spec of the rest of your machine? isaac_cm
I have now xfx 6600 it is 256 card, what is the suitable undo settings I should use ?
Derek Forreal
Isaac, i think it's going to be difficult to use Max with your current pc. if you really want to try lowering the undo levels, you can do so in the preferences dialogue. i don't think you can switch it off but you can lower it to 1, but remember that this way you can only undo 1 mistake - is that really what you want?! one last suggestion is to make sure you are using direct 3d (customize > preferences > viewports > choose driver). the only other suggestions i have are the ones i wrote above. i really would look into upgrading your pc though. it doesn't have to be cutting edge stuff you know - why not ask in the hardware section of this site? and rememer that so far you've only added a sofa. what about when you add the rest of the furniture? or worse still when you start adding plants?! unfortunately more polys = more power requirement.
