Odie
Hello everyone. This is my first official post here. I've known about this community for years, but have spent most of my time on other boards. Today, I felt was time to join, as I have a specific question for y'all... So, I've been a long-time user of 3DS Max, but I think my next software upgrade will be a switch to C4D R11. I'm curious to know if there is a dirt simulator for C4D that is at least as good as DirtyReyes was for Max. This was by far my favorite plugin. So far I haven't found much with Google. I know that a similar effect can be applied using ambient occlusion. DirtyReyes, seemed a little bit more realistic than that, though. It always gave that believable, "splotchy" look. Anybody have any ideas? Thanks!!
Frosty
Try this. http://www.cgarchitect.com/vb/13957-cinema-4d-dirt-effect.html
Odie
Thanks for the link, Frosty. I'd heard of this "dirt" shader, and that it uses the same basic principles as Ambient Occlusion (or it is AO, not sure). I was curious to know, though, if anyone had encountered a plugin for C4D (or internal settings) that rivaled DirtyReyes output for Max. I'm still not 100% sure I'm going to switch to C4D, but I'm heavily leaning in that direction. I also heard that the Dirt Shader was added, then removed in later versions. Is that true? Cheers! William Alexander
Dirt Shader was not removed ... renamed to AO and made available on a global and shader level. I've never seen a 'plugin', though there might be predifined shaders that use the AO function as a shader for Dirt. Should 'smell like almonds' SLA shaders at one point in time. The controls for AO occlusion are in depth and a plugin almost seems redundant ... given how the scene and object sizes vary the settings to get AO to generate 'Dirt-grunge' for sure. Ambient occlusion for making lighting based effect (Old Dirt terminology) it's even easier. My 2 cents
Odie
Ok, so it looks like AO does essentially the same thing. I knew there had to be a reason why they stopped releasing those dirt plugins... I've been out of the 3D loop for a while. Thanks for your help, guys!
