Jonathan
In the process of bulding up a masterplan for a final year university project I am having problems with rendering in 3ds max. My scene is made up from various elements (one of which I have attached) to form a much larger project. My clumsyness has led me to cloning and modifying these elements to create the bigger picture yet when I apply materials and attempt to render with daylight the software freezes. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to deal with this issue? Thanks in advance Johnny
jkletzien
well, there are a bunch of issues that might affect that, none of which are really scrutible from the image you've posted. It could be face count but I think it is probably your daylight system. My recommendation is to at least temporarily ditch the daylight system (which if I recall is a raytraced solution with area shadows calculated by max, aka the very definition of forever) and go with direct lights, and a dome array of omnis (to emulate skylight) all using shadow maps. (there should be an old tutorial somewhere). It won't be as precise...but if your scene is a spread out one, it shouldn't matter too much.
Crazy Homeless Guy
What is the engine doing when it freezes? Translating geometry, calculating FG, rendering, before translating?
Jonathan
Thanks for your input. I shall try the dome of omnis approach which I have not come across. Excuse the late reply I have been busy with the birth of our first baby! Johny
