amer abidi
Im working on this scene for a competition, and id really appreciate all your thoughts / ideas as i can feel the plateau not so far ahead. Basic model provided by Evermotion, made some changes to it. Only rule is no post. Everything has to be done from within the 3D package (max 2009 in my case). Ive decided to go for a captured moment in time rather than an "architectural shot", not neglecting the architecture in the process of course. The image will be based around a woman and her cat.. the kids are asleep and she's alone .. its a cold winter night, and a beautiful full moon.. so she decides to retreat into the heated pool for a few moments of serenity.. I've attached a couple of images to show where i'm at, just throw in your ideas.. do you think camera angle is ok? is it too dark? water ok? Worth mentioning a few things: i am using mental ray, caustics are fake, currently working on interiors, and still haven't touched the sky (environment), and finally the woman pose will change and not e so erotic once i model the cat by the pool side.. Im trying to go for as "natural" a moment as possible.
amer abidi
and a slightly earlier render..
John Dollus
if the moment is to be one of serenity, i'd suggest you change her pose significantly. She looks rather precariously placed right now and quite uncomfortable. Also, it doesn't seem to capture the Cartier-Bresson spirit as it's composed now. Looking at it, she could be a bronze sculpture instead of a living person experiencing the space.
Horhe
Looks quite alright Amer. The grass blades are a bit too thick and uniform IMO, and the image is a bit too uniformly lit. What about 'letting go' in a part of the image? I know its a bit tricky as no PS is allowed here. Good luck in the competition! dgolden
Feels a little bit like a cave to me. Maybe too dark?
manta
the moon looks 2 dimensional and at an angle...
Tommy L
I hate seeing boobs in renderings. Dont know what it is, I mean I am a fan of boobs in general, just not in renderings. Makes me think of pervy geeks obsessing in ther bedrooms.
amer abidi
Thanks for your feedback fellas... John, your absolutely right.. The woman in the current scene is just a placeholder really, the one im modeling now is very natural looking and not so "erotic" in a sense. Jakub Thanks mate..long time! how you doin? Thanks for that uniformly loit comment..i was beginning to feel it was, but badly needed a second thought..i've been browsing around google images trying to find some inspiration but cant seem to find it anywhere.. I'll have another go at lighting the scene differently dgolden you really think its too dark? lighting it up further makes it somewhat uncomfortable and unnatural... hmm... dont know, maybe ill look into it again. Manta Thanks yeah i'm aware of that, as i haven't addressed the sky and moon yet.. weird that thats the only thing that caught your eye. and Tommy even though i dont feel as strongly as you do towards boobs in renderings, i do see your point... in this case however, her boobs will be insignificant in the final image, as i said, the current model is just a placeholder in the scene. Thanks again guys for your feedback, i'll post an update soon.
dgolden
Well it's definitely not too dark for a cave. But serenity is a hard look to go for I think. For example, looking at the tree the word "spooky" comes to mind before the word "serene" and the inside of the house, at least in the second shot, definitely looks a bit too dark for me. My eye is drawn there, and I feel like my human eyes would normally be able to distinguish more in there, even in the very low light. I know it's a pretty tricky thing to do. Good luck! amer abidi
lol...thanks David, completely agree about the tree as for the interiors, i still havenet done them (as i mentioned earlier). I'm currently relighting the scene with a different approach. I want to get the right lighting "mood" before i go ahead and work on more modeling. The tough part for me is balancing between three 4 major lights: 1- Moon light (ambient) 2- Pool light (and caustic effect) 3- Exterior lighting of house 4- Interior lighting. Doing any one of these, i can get pretty satisfactory results, but trying to combine all four at different levels has proven to be a challenge. I am now thinking i might lose one or 2 completely... for example, just focus on moonlight pool light, with a hint of interiors (losing the exterior lighting on the walls). still experimenting. will be posting soon. Thanks again.
dgolden
Yeah, I've also found it tricky in the past to get a good balance between interior and exterior lighting in a single shot. It makes it much harder when you can't do any compositing...
Pechara
I hate seeing boobs in renderings. Dont know what it is, I mean I am a fan of boobs in general, just not in renderings. Makes me think of pervy geeks obsessing in ther bedrooms. hehehe, yeah! But what if the client wanted boobs?! I did this rendering for a nudist colony in Florida about 8 years ago. T http://www.pechara.com/work-caliente.html the client used this to advertise the new clubhouse in "adult" magazines. So does that mean I crossed into the Porn industry?! Well, i tried my best to position the 3D models in such a way so it does not scream boobs, but he did want it, lots of it! Oh, and the people at this colony do not look anything like in the rendering: http://calienteresorts.com/tampa/tour/laborday_06.htm
Tommy L
That is frickin hilarious. How did you keep a straight face in client meetings?
Pechara
I only had telephone meetings with him. The first thing he asked me if I can render naked people. I thought it was a joke so i told him sure. Than after a few "really?" from me, it became evident that he really meant it. I had a great time on this project, with my wife just shaking her head. Oh the good ole times! amer abidi
okay okay...so now its about a man and his dog... The man is an author, away to his seaside summer retreat writing his new book, when suddenly he realizes a moment of true serenity. Ive changed my POV and lighting approach, and am liking this composition a lot more than the previous one. I still have 6 days left, and much detail to work on, but please share your crits and/or ideas. Thanks. Tommy L
Nice, but its all too much the same color for me. Not enough contrast. Lacks a focal point as well.
mi75
I agree with Tommy's comments. Plus I (personaly) thought it looked like a scale model due to the DOF at first glance. Otherwise I think its on its way to being a fantastic image. Mart
amer abidi
Thanks guys... I felt it needed a focal point as well, and i dont believe it should be central. I really like the wide angle of the shot, so will try to contrast as much of the house as possible as opposed to the water and sky.
