mervin_lim23
hello guys. im having a problem right now. im currently doing a scene opf a house that has a lot of displacements. everytime im in a process of my final rendering, 3dmax automatically shutting off everytime it reaches the physical memory usage of 1500 and so on. im made my dynamic memory to 4000mb but stil no luck. i also turn off some of the displacement but still it eats alot of memory. is there other way of solving this other than adjusting the dynamic memory limit? im using core2quad 9400 with a RAM of 3 gig. any help or tip will be appreciated
O.D.S
What OS are you using? 32 bit has a 1500mb memory limit per program, so when max/vray reaches that they crash. (there is a fix for xp pro to allow upto 2GB per program) Displacement does use alot of memory (are you using the VraydisplacementMod?) i personally break up my scene and composite them together in Photoshop. (hide pieces from the camera view & render in stages)

mervin_lim23
another question. what if i use xp64bit as my OS, is there alot difference? will it solve my problem?
WAcky
You need to look up something called the "3gb switch" which will allow you to utilize all your memory. I dont know of a particular guide but a google search should turn up some results. And regarding a 64 bit system, yes it will fix all your problems. Well maybe not all but it makes for a much smoother experiece as crashes in general will greatly decrease in number.

amer abidi
it wont "damage" your system at all, and besides a good practice is to have both options (with and without /3GB switch) for you to choose at bootup.. since sometimes the 3GB switch does mess up with thte graphics on multiple screens. [boot loader] timeout=30 default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS [operating systems] multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Pro" multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Pro with /3GB" /3GB This will give you both oprions at startup, so you can use the normal version for modeling, and then switch to /3GB for rendering (for example)
