Cynthia Hansen
Working on another piece for my portfolio. This cafe is a takeoff from one that I saw created by Karim Rashid. I like all of the soft forms he uses and wanted to try my hand at modeling some of them.
Kawzy
The soft forms are working. All the smooth, curved modeling adds an interesting aspect. In looking at the attachment, only two things are really catching a bit of attention to me. The tiles in the low left of the image are seeming just a bit large to me. I'm just basing it off of the wall tiles though and maybe that was the intent in the first place. It just seems that they are rectangular in shape and are too long in one direction. The grout lines also seem just a bit large and deep. The second thing that caught my attention was the back red wall. Maybe it's the texture but it seems like there is light spilling onto the wall in conical shapes, created from either an IES light or just a straight up spotlight. Which is a cool effect and one used often, however if the only lights in the room are the recessed lighting running through the center, my personal opinion is that the light cones are too high on the wall and probably wouldn't show up that far from the recessed lights. I would suggest either addings some lights a bit closer to the wall and maintain the effect, or just to remove it all together. Just my two cents however. Edit: I take back the grout comment. The depth seems right to not make the floor appear flat.
Cynthia Hansen
Hi Josh, thanks for the indepth reply. There are recessed ies lights against that wall. It's boxed out but you can't really see it here as the image is small and boy did it get blurry uploading it. I'll check on the smaller tiles. They should be square and it may just be the camera angle but will have a look. Thanks for pointing it out. When I render at a larger size hopefully things will be clearer. Kawzy
Ah. Well then the lights make perfect sense. And I may be completely wrong on the tile, it just seems that with the apparent length of the grout line perpendicular to the wall, another might be visible to the lower right and possibly even upper left close to the edges of the image. But I would guess you're right about the camera angle playing tricks.
innerdream
The forms look cool. There is something killing this image for me. The blue frame for the opening/window in front has no apparent thickness and it's making the image flat, like a graphic. It would help to have some shading on a portion of the opening. I also think the lighting outside is not helping sell the interior, they're almost too much the same. Keep up the good work. Cynthia Hansen
Thanks Robert, the frame around the window has a definite edge and thickeness but it's supposed to be a neon wrapped light(I used a Vray light material) which seems to be killing the edge then. Hmm, will have to play with it more.
Cynthia Hansen
Here's my revised image rendered out a larger scale so will hopefully read better. Played with the edges on the blue neon rim per Robert's suggestion as well as the lighting from outside to in. I think theres more depth now. Josh, I double checked on the smaller tiles and they were indeed square, so the camera is just stretching it a bit. PS: Can anybody tell me why my images are looking so blurry here? I don't think I've ever had such a problem before. They're certainly crisp on my monitor. *(second one I just put an unsharp mask on it to see if that would help) Edited May 28, 2009 by Cynthia Hansen
Kawzy
I think the resolution had something to do with it also cause I can now make out the two grout lines I had expected to see. The neon around the window opening looks much better now and overall the image is looking pretty spiffy
