SSS problem

Helo!

I hope that someone can help me with this issue.

This is a simple test i did with maxwell (1.7.1) and 3ds Max Design 2009 (x64) (maxwell-max 1.7.11 plugin).

There are two boxes: one about 150x150x5 cm (the base), with the default gray material applied to it, and another on top of the firs one about 40x60x50 cm with a SSS (flint preset) material applied.

The boxes don't intersect, and are about 5 cm apart.

Max display unit scale is set to cm, system unit is 1unit= 1 cm.

Everything else is set to default (including render settings).

I am also running Windows Vista64.

I intend to use maxwell for a more complex project and now I was just testing materials.

Thank you!

If you are using an SSS material downloaded from the mxm website, this could be the reason for the artifacts you are having...those are called "black spots of death" (!) and are caused by the fact that with 1.6 the SSS has been completely rewritten and old SSS materials are not correctly read.

You could just try to create a new material and then change it to SSS.

At this point you can choose from the dropdown menu on the material's tab one of the presets (jade glass, candle wax....blood)

Hope this could help

Anyway for such technical problems you should tke a look directly on the maxwell international forum site

Thank you for answering.

The problem is that i created that material with one of the presets from the wizard (it was flint in this case) and still got the "black dots of death", and there was no problem with the geometry since those objects are simple boxes.

I tried the maxwell forum but for some reason unknown to me i cant post, reply or do anything but view and unfortunately no one had a problem like this, and after an hour i got tired searching for some way of contacting an administrator.

Maybe i got the material library mixed up with one from an older version, I'll try and reinstall it, maybe it will work, or maybe I'll find a way to post on that bloody forum.

Thank you, I'll check if i did mix up the material libray.

So, I uninstalled maxwell, deleted the material library, uninstalled the plugin, cleaned up leftovers, reinstalled it (maxwell 1.7.1, and maxwell-max 1.7.11) and still got the "black dots of death".

Does anyone have any idea why this is happening?

I have 3dsmax design 2009 x64 I created two boxes and one of them has a SSS material created with the wizard (flint preset, but the same happens whatever SSS preset I chose), max units are set to cm (1unit=1cm), everything is set to default. When I render my image gets the "plague".

However, when I import a 3DS model to maxwell studio and apply the same materials there it seems to render just fine, so I guess Max screws something up.

I still get the black dots of death when I export a MXS from max with materials applied and I render it from maxwell studio.

Does anyone have any idea why this is happening?

I have maxwell demo, but i don't think this is a demo issue.

Thank you for helping me.

...and one more thing: does anyone have any idea why I can't post anything on the maxwell forum? I'm planing on buying the damn thing, and have this question right now. And forgot to mention, I cannot contact any administrator or moderator, so how exactly am I supposed to gen an answer? I'm starting to have second thoughts about buying maxwell if this is what i'm going to get for technical support.

....ok I found out that I couldn't post on the forum because I wasn't a customer, but the guys at tech support offered to help me anyway, so now I feel bad for getting angry at them.
