Dave Buckley
I'm looking at starting a blog with Wordpress, mainly to use as a place to keep all my renders so that i can start sending a link out to prospective employers. (i see a lot of them are asking for weblinks) However, i have only ever used Blogger. I want to use wordpress as i think it is smart, sleek and professional. Does anyone have any experience?? Is it easy for beginners?? Peter Guthrie if your out there I love you're blog, so if you have any tips then please share

Nic H
wordpress is super easy to use, and has LOTS of decent templates. its quiet easy to tweak them with a bit of css fumbling as well. miles ahead of Blogger.
Dave Buckley
thanks for the help guys, i'm currently running through some tutorials for it, should i get stuck then i will keep you all on hand and post my queries here its quite fun actually, not done anything like this. i'm trying to build a theme from scratch :$ hopefully won't take me too long
Logan.W
Yep, Wordpress is miles ahead of blogger. Really easy to use to once you've set it up. If you're building a theme from scratch and you're just starting out coding. You're bound to run into problems. It's like giving a blind man a flame-torch in a cave. Doesn't make a difference. hehe But let us know how you go. We'll be more than glad to help you out.
Dave Buckley
cheers guys well like i say i'm following tutorials its seems ok so far, i get the concept of coding i've just never done it. so far i have a title, description in a header and the title links back to my home page we're getting there
Logan.W
Wicked, are you developing the site offline or online? If it's online, could you give us a link so that we can keep an eye on you! =P
Dave Buckley
i'm developing offline in my spare time, to be honest i shouldn't be doing it now because i'm in work so i've stopped. Gonna carry on over lunch. When i have something half decent i'll get it online (when i figure out how to do so) apparently i need a web host? honestly i'm so new to this jargon. i use the internet and that's about as far as it goes. but yeh when i get something worth showing then i'll gladly let you keep tabs on me. as i said i just want something simple, sleek and professional to showcase my work. check out http://www.peterguthrie.net/blog/ for what i'm after, although i don't wanna rip this off. i still want something unique, but that is a good example of my impressions of smart, sleek and professional. i guess it helps that peters work is a good standard too
Logan.W
ahah lol -- "Dave... YOU'RE FIRRRRRRRRED!" -- wow that reminds me about Mr. McMan on WWE/WWF or the classic cartoon, The Jetsons. To get it online, you can either convert your PC into a server -- long process, don't do it. Get a free host... to just showcase and develop your site. Rent a host. For about ~$5 a month. Try Bluehost or Dreamhost. Don't really like GoDaddy. You could always post full website screenshots. Google "Browsershots" and you'll get a website and variours plugins for a web-browser to capture full shots of a webpage. I could try doing something for you. I've made template for people, I could probably look for one and mod it. Edit: Some free templates. http://blogdesignblog.com/wordpress_theme_demo/ http://www.techzoomin.com/17-quality-wordpress-themes-for-free/ You can get a pretty sweet portfolio for under $30 over here: http://themeforest.net/category/wordpress/creative Edited June 10, 2009 by Logan.W
tayrona
Just a comment: Wordpress is really good, but is not the only CMS tool... Made simple is just great... I tried wordpress and was a good experience, but now I am doing the same page with "madesimple" and I feel much better... customization is in a higher level. Logan.W
your very kind but times are hard and i wouldn't expect you to do anything for free so i guess i'm just going to learn. thanks for the heads up on the web hosts Lol na, I wasn't going to charge you. Money means nothing to me. Despite the fact that we all need it. But Love has higher values than money for me. i guess one tip you could give me is how to change the font of the text in my header You need to open the styles.css file. Look for #header or h1 style tags. You should define the properties in #header. #header { .... font-family: italic normal 120% 'Times New Roman', Times, serif; .... } In addition, you can also find styles in the header.php file too.
