chow choppe
hi wats the best way to show grass on a vast area in an aerial view if i use plain grass bitmap it looks too monotonous and repetitive.i also tried using a mix map with custom made mask but that also is not looking realistic. displacement is not looking good in aerial view any suggestions? thanks
Nic H
keep trying with blend mats, use 3 different ones, experiment with noise types for masks. try clipping the values(like (.45, .6) to remove the fluffly falloff areas. or try making one bitmap for the view. maybe some mowing lines, this helps bring out the topography

Claudio Branch
You might also consider getting a hi-res aerial image of something like a golf course or a grassy field and Photoshopping out what you don't need...

Juan Altieri
You might also consider getting a hi-res aerial image of something like a golf course or a grassy field and Photoshopping out what you don't need... agree with this, also using a mix map with some colour variations, i made 2 texture versions with some colour balance (between gerrn and brown) variations and using a mask to mix them... also using a non regular displace map will help you... Nic H
if u are using vray use a vrayblend rather than mixmaps, faster, more stable and you can stack up more that 2 maps easily.

Claudio Branch
The advantage to going with a hi-res aerial is that you can easily customize it with any additional features you like in Photoshop. Here is a sample image from a recent project. The terrain geometry is mapped with a single hi-res image that I stole from another project and modified it for this one. If you find yourself doing alot of large outdoor terrain projects, this approach becomes very effective because you save time using a texture that is already pretty close to what you need. chow choppe
thanks claudio but where do u find these high res textures i spent almost a day finding these kind of images but to no luck finally i had to make it on my own using grass pattern fill and using dodge , burn tools and changing hues in areas thanks Edited June 12, 2009 by 3dsmaxed
Claudio Branch
I believe you can search the forum and find several sources listed in previous threads. Some sources are free, others are not...
