Jape
Hi all, After a long wait the new book for 3dsmax 6 from new riders is finally published here(netherlands). Now my question is if i can better buy the version 6 or the older version 5 ??, cause in the new book its about modeling a boat/yaught and the number 5 book deals about a medievval street, wich i guess is maybe more applicable (is that the correct word?) to architecture, wich is my main interest offcourse. So are there people who have the new edition ? and is there a difference ?? Or are all these books just as productive for architecture ?? Or are there any other books that you'd recommend. I know the author of the book (Ted Boardman) is very active in the field (his oustanding columns and his help on this forum!)thats why i chose for the new riders publication. Because i know from experience there are also books that dissapointed me and i felt was more of a extended manual sort of speak. So does anyone have a idea on this ??? kingeldar
if u can modes curves of a boat u'll easily model architecure walls and other perpendicular stuff... & knowing how to model curve stuff will be very good 4 all that fashion architecure with plane wings 4 a roof, curved curtain walls... so go on will be tough but feel so good after... Jape
Well that's true kingeldar, thx for your reply, but modeling isn't my main interest, also animating, texturing, compositing amongst others is being handled, and beceause i can model reasonbly well(though still need to learn lots of stuff)my main interest is a book that also deals with tips/techniques/workflow etc that goes beyond the, what i call, extended manuels or simple tutorials. Ted Boardman
>>and is there a difference ?? Or are all these books just as productive for architecture ?? Hi Jape, I'll jump in with a biased opinion! The exercises are totally new and are intended to show uses for some of the fundamental techniqes that will help anyone, a boat one part but there are exercises that create accurate landscape from traced topographic maps, there are some interior exercises, not traditional architecture, but the methods would be the same. Lots on lighting and materials, too. I just heard from someone last week who said the radiosity chapters were just what they needed to clear up issues they were having. Just as a note, the Fundamentals can be a bit confusing and doesn't mean raw beginner. One must have done the shipping tutorials or have worked with max to get the most out of it, but there are production methods for everyone. You should be able to get the max 5 book, check Amazon or Ebay for cheap copies. Thanks much, in any case. Ted
Jape
Hi mr. Boardman, Thx for your fast reply, [i just heard from someone last week who said the radiosity chapters were just what they needed to clear up issues they were having.] Indeed this sort of thing is what im lookig for i can get along with max quite well but the trouble im having is that im having trouble with certain aspects, such as more complex texturing or lighting. The trouble im having with some books is that they do write about stuff like radiostiy and give a whole list of its functions but it doesnt give the reader the big picture about how to use them and wich are the most important aspects of the radiostiy functions. I have a max book that i think is more reference/extended manual than real projects. And indeed i have done (most of) the shipped tutorials, and have been using max for about a year. So thats why im looking for a more advanced book on max. But i do think i will go for the new V6 book cause i am using max 6 and do not want to miss some of the new functionalities.... Btw i found a more in-depth description of the topics on the newriders site, wich helped me out also, Thx again ted!, Jape,
Ted Boardman
>>The trouble im having with some books is that they do write about stuff like radiostiy and give a whole list of its functions but it doesnt give the reader the big picture about how to use them and wich are the most important aspects of the radiostiy functions I do try to get explanations for why I do things the way I do, Jape, instead of just which buttons to push but I've had to cut back in recent books because a lot of people just want the buttons. I find it hard to learn that way, personally. Thanks and good luck Ted
