Dave Buckley
guys attached is image, i'm trying to bring a dwg into max for materials lights and rendering. however it's a bit rubbish in terms of translation and can't seem to get it in smoothly. I have minimal autocad knowledge so it may be a case of doing something with it in autocad before export. if you anyone could take a look then please feel free to give me clues, the entire geometry is from autocad architecture 07 i believe. i have smooth angle set to 0.1 and all the other settings set to what i believe to be optimum settings after reading various post on here dwg is too big to post on here, but will happily email it to anyone that wants to take a look
Stephen Thomas
Try just resetting your smoothing groups under editable poly settings and then redo an auto smooth, should do the trick. Or else you could add either a meshsmooth or turbosmooth modifier if that doesn't do it.
Dave Buckley
didn't work, the objects that are shown in the screen shot are 'Viz Blocks' if that helps?? I can acess the individual parts but can't seem to extract just the sinks for example in order to work on just those
Dave Buckley
can i email the dwg to you
martincg
try to convert it to mesh firstly /or add edit mesh modifier/ and then apply - smooth/with checked auto smooth/ or turbosmooth - sometime is need to weld vertexes before applying smooth , but i think this is not your case
dogragurjeet
Other alternative is to tamper import settings. Marked red in the attached picture, these properties can be used to control how the mesh is imported into max. I am using max 9 and importing an autocad 2007 dwg file, so i think it would be same in your case also. Smooth angle, i think you have already dealt with. Curve steps defines in how many steps will curves in dwg file be imported. Increasing the number increases smoothness of curves but also increases file size dramatically. Surface deviation of solids defines how much deviation will be allowed when importing dwg files. Keeping this to a minimum is recommended. I hope this will help. Dave Buckley
yup done these settings over and over trying to optimize the import. it turns out it's just a generally bad model. only way round is to remodel, which i can confirm i won't be doing
JonRashid
sometimes making a snapshot provides you with an editable mesh version of weird models
dogragurjeet
do you have autocad or other dwg format editing software?. You can tweak the settings withing that and try to import again. If not remodel the scene in max
