SandmanNinja
i7, XP64, 3ds 2009 Design, 9800GT video card, 6-gigs ram Hello... I was playing with the Grass-O-Matic plugin and I noticed my test scene wa taking a (relatively) long time to render. I pulled up the old trusty Task Manager and only 1 or 2 cores were pushing 100% with the others sitting idle. Worried I quickly made a test scene with some mrSky, mrSun, car paint and a knotted torus sitting on a highly reflective piece of white plastic. I wanted the computer to think about the scene for a minute or two. Yeah, all 8 cores jump up and do what they're meant to do. Is this a known issue? Am I missing a tick box some place? I know scanline only uses a single core and that's yet another advantage of using mental ray. Thanking you
mattclinch
assuming you have downloaded the 64-bit plugin and not a 32-bit version?
quizzy
except for renderer plugins, most of the plugins are single threaded.
SandmanNinja
Ahhh... thanks guys. Good info Quizzy. Doing some tests with Particles and Shape Instances now - frustrating not using all the cores. I couldn't stand to do an entire 30m x 40m yard on a single core. I'll post some WIPs for feedback. quizzy
since you have an i7, and you want single-threaded operations go faster, I would disable the Hyperthreading in your bios.
SandmanNinja
but would I lose the illusion of 8 cores then? I'm getting some good results with particles and all the cores continue to contribute to the end result with them.
Justin Hunt
as far as I understand it not all operations in Max are multi-threaded. So even if you had 100 core they would still use one. Its one of the main bugbears max has over other 3d programs that are fully multi-threaded. jhv
SandmanNinja
aahhh thanks Mate pflow is looking like the winner for me. Very easy to customise different styles of grass, make 5% daisies, 20% longer, etc I'll post a wip with some render times and cpu core response as well.
