clowny666
Hello, Hoping someone can help me, I've been tasked with dragging our Local Authority practice into the 21st century by starting to offer clients 3D presentations. We currently use Vectorworks in the office and I've been looking at Cinema 4D to offer that functionality. Now, being a Local Authority I have to convince them that splashing out on several licencses for C4D is going to reap some benefits. So, I've got the demo version and I'm trying to import Vectorworks drawings without much luck. Could you guys help me with posting how best works for yourselves? I know there are several methods but I can't work out which is gonna be best to demonstrate how wonderful this package could be. Thanks guys! Paul Griger
Hello, I don't use VW, but here is a couple of threads at the Postforum C4D RE VW to C4D: http://www.postforum.com/forums/search.php?f=6&search=vectorworks&match=1&date=0&fldsubject=1 and this thread addresses the VW plug-in to transfer VW files to C4D. Sounds pretty nice: http://www.postforum.com/forums/read.php?f=6&i=70427&t=70427 Hope these help. Best, paul
Frosty
Clowny, You should be able to move from VW to C4D with a DXF file. The new plug in sounds really sweet, but I have no experience with it yet.
clowny666
Thanks guys. The problem I have is that I'm using the Demo version that doesn't come with the plugin. I need to be able to demonstrate to the powers-that-be that C4D is the one for us. However, I'm not having much luck importing stuff into C4D at all to be honest. So I can't convince them to spend oodles of cash on something that doesn't quite work!!!!
STRAT
thats strange, all the c4d demos i've tried allow .dxf or .3ds importing.
chalky
Clowny Just to say that i use VW10 with C4D using the plug-in and it works seamlessly. if you're using VW then i'd say that C4D is the way to go. The plug-in makes life so much easier as there are slight problems using DXF files to import in to C4D, used to get some polygon loss and DXF files can be very large sometimes. If you phone Maxon UK, the plug-in used to be available as a seperate purchase item (£10 approx) which would save having to buy the VW/C4D package. I used to work for local authority so i know what you're up against when trying to get them to spend money but if you can then i'm sure the results will justify the cost. Good Luck
Chris H
Hi Clowny666, You can go the dxf route to import VW files, but with the plug-in, it's so much smoother. I've been testing it out in our office for the past week and it's great. I had a small glitch with a door symbol, but I think it was user error and not the translation of the file. As far as I know, there is no demo version of the plug-in. I was in the same position as you about a month ago trying to push for C4D and wanting to test it out to see if it's as good as they say it is. We took the plunge and it definately is worth it. If you have any specific questions, just ask, I'll try and answer them as best I can. Good luck! Chris
clowny666
Thanks Chris, I'm desperately trying to import items from Vectorworks into C4D manually. I can't seem to get hold of the plugin unfortunately so that's a no go. I have had varying degrees of success importing manually but I was hoping someone more knowledgeable would help me with the workflow. Ahhh, my life would be so much easier if I could use that plugin, the frustrating thing is that it's free. But, you can't get the plugin without a proper R8 licence, and I can't convince them to buy several R8 licences without proving the plugin works!!!!! raypin
hi all, the plugin works well, it lets you export your scene in classes, materials or colors, also light. but nurbs are not yet supported. so this will create the polygon objects in cinema 4d. it is a good start, and you can add new objects into your cinema 4d scene. but you can do all of that also with the dxf export out of vectorworks and rename the classes in cinema into your object names. i hope this helps, regards raypin
