Macca23
thought id do a little update. Most of the modelling is done now, ill be adding shrubs, hedges etc along behind the fence. Going to start texturing some time this afternoon. Let me know what you think please.
cadmunkey
The picture is a little lowres to be able to critique properly, but its coming along ok. Is this your own design?
CarlAhearne
Paul, The first thing I'd say is that everything looks a little 'fuzzy'... Not sure what render engine you are using, or what settings you are using, but you need to look at those... It'll be much easier for people to comment once you've got a bit further into it and get out some crisp renders... Looking OK so far though, so looking forward to seeing an update... Macca23
Yes it is my own design, sorry for the low res images, just quicker to render until i get near finishing it. Hopefully have another update some time this afternoon
Macca23
Does ne-one know where i can get a small image with some curtains on to use behind the windows so they don't look so plain and boring? Cheers
Macca23
Just a quick update of where im up to now. I know i have some tiling issues with the rocks by the water, need to work on them. C&C welcome though please
Macca23
Just another little update, added some curtains and blinds to the windows so they dont look so boring. Comments please?
Cad64
The hedge looks very flat and unrealistic. Is it just a box with an image mapped onto it? Also, the curtains and blinds need some attention. Are you still working on them?
Macca23
The hedge is a chamferred box with a noise modifier added to it. Also bump in the texture. Not quite sure how to achieve a good hedge? The curtains need to be a bit wavier yet. Not sure what to do with the blinds?
Macca23
Could anyone tell me a good way to create realistic hedges without using a lot of memory? I tried the particle array way, but it kept crashing my system when i upped it to 10,000 particles.
Macca23
Heres a final update of how i want the apartments looking, added the sky in photoshop no other work in post production. C & C please before i add it to finished work section. Sorry for the large image.
Matt McDonald
Have you thought about swinging the sun around to the other side? Right now its basically coming from behind the camera which flattens out what little articulation the building features. I think that you need to look for additional ways to break up the rendering. Varying the hedge some or swap it out with something else every few meters. Put some stuff on the patios. People walking down below. Break up that shadow in the water. This rendering is for sh!ts and grins right? Why not break up the sea wall and make a nice little pedestrian area? That's a lot of stuff but I think its what you need to really get some pop out of that rendering. BTW if you are having trouble making a better hedges due to particle limitations, make one as long as you can, apply mesher, proxy it out and then make another one using different parameters. Good luck man, and keep posting!
Macca23
Thanks for the comments dude, ill see what i can do to improve it. Anyone else got any C & C? Ta
cadmunkey
What happened to the curtains and blinds? Looks good, but I agree that you need to change the angle of the sun.
Ernest Burden III
Flood insurance? Have you thought about swinging the sun around to the other side? That would help a lot. Besides the flattening, having the sun the way you have it makes the shadows point along the lines of the composition towards the oblivion just off the left edge of the picture. Try the sun rotated so the balconies cast their shadows towards the right a little. Play with the angle, but also the vertical angle, making longer or shorter shadows. Then increase skylight or GI bounced light to brighten the shadowed areas. they read dark, dead.
Pictor
Looks good but some reflection/specular on the railings & drainpipes would lift them a bit. Also if you have the time model up some simple interior walls/floorplates with a slightly off white colour so you can see a hint of something inside. Might work better with the curtains & blinds back in but reel in the blinds a bit and lighten the colour closer to white or something subtle that will conrast a little more with the stonework. Not too keen on curtains with ties esp. in a building like this so try something more like this; http://www.turbosquid.com/3d-models/3d-curtains-model/266455 They're easy to knock up, just a single sided plane with a 100 or so width segments and slap on a ripple modifier. No need to bother with hooks etc at this distance/angle. For the material if you're using vray a simple off white vray mat with an output map set to .8 (or lower for more transparent) in the opacity channel and slot the whole material into a vray 2 sided material should do the job. Hedge looks a little dense to me, perhaps have a play with some of the free x-frog ones on Autodesk seek; http://seek.autodesk.com/product/latest/agg/xfrog/xfrog-inc-greenworks-organic-software/LS04 Will take longer to render but if you instance it there shouldn't be a problem with RAM hope this helps! Macca23
Another update here, I've rotated the suns position, added proper hedges, added curtains to the windows and added some small plants to some of the balconies. Comments please There's a few shiny patches on this one, not sure where they have come from though?
