3dwannab
---------------------------------------------------------------- SHORT TITLE FOR SUGGESTION/BUG/ENHANCEMENT REQUEST ---------------------------------------------------------------- A snap from tool like in AutoCAD "I no it isn't A/C but it still is a modelling tool, which i have to say makes simple things look so hard to do" --------------------------------------------------------------- DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF YOUR REQUEST --------------------------------------------------------------- It would be great if they could incorporate the snap from tool in max like in AutoCAD where you can specify a point then type in a value to place the object in relation to that point. This also relates to max's inability to allow the user to TYPE IN the value e.g. length of a line but there's a useful script for that called Polyspline v3 or moving objects around the scene accuratly. mmmmh "WHY CANT MAX ALREADY DO THIS NATURALLY" --------------------------------------------------------------- WHY THIS REQUEST IS IMPORTANT TO YOU --------------------------------------------------------------- Instead of moving the object twice its done in one action and with greater simplicity. JonRashid
There are a lot of methods to get round this in max. There are many snap tools already. You can use the transform type in at a vert level for perpendicular lines. If your smart you can use the array tool for points at intermediary angles. If you toggle ur coord system between absolute and offset you are able to identify/place locate any 3d coord. Ok you might need two steps rather than 1, but max isn't really a drafting tool although it does a very good job.
3dwannab
OK, I have been using autoCAD for 9 years now, and translated to max which is tough to say the least and been using it for only 2 years (I really love it and what it stands for buts its niggley things that it doesn't do which frustrate me) e.g. drawing a line, click to start, type in the coordinates would that be so hard to put into the program seeing as typing umbers in whilst in that command is still active does ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!! if is was a drafting tool combined with max allowing users to choose which line of work they do then fair enough, give people that chance e.g. architects v oraganic modellers. Its used by both sets of people but comes with only 1 type of workflow. If you use AutoCAD then it only apply s to people in the technician side of things. Sorry 1 more thing, why oh why can the transform dialog box not be docked... sorry but this is ridiculous, we are no longer working on 14 inch monitors so we have more screen space. Personally I've got a 30 inch monitor but most or all serious 3ds users have a big screen or multiple screens. This is what I mean by it doesn't have the most basis things inside it!!! Hope you see where I'm cumin from Ste S Edited July 3, 2009 by 3dwannab
JonRashid
Have u tried using the keyboard entry panel in the creat line panel. Enter ur coords add point, enter ur coords add point etc.
3dwannab
yes, know that one already, but the fact that when you do type while dragging a line a numerical value on your keyboard it has NO functionality at all. Same with move a box, polygon etc etc etc etc After all this is a WISH LIST not a workaround that doesn't work well. Ste

Trick
http://www.scriptspot.com/3ds-max/polyspline That's the script mentioned in the first post: Polyspline v3 What I find unbelievable is that in the last 4-5 (or more) versions of Max the relative coordinates when drawing a 2D (poly)line (when grid snap is ON) are HIDDEN under the snap location readout in the status bar at the bottom of the Max window !!! When snap is OFF they are perfectly visible. Reported many times. So much for listening to your customers... Note: in the keyboard entry you can also type in relative coordinates by pretyping "r": x:"r30" put point 30units right from current point ! Not much of a help since you can not combine interactive and keyboard entry method... Edited July 4, 2009 by Trick
