Freelancing advice

Recommended Posts

Hi...

I'm here for more than 2 years and I never wrote anything. But now I am looking for some advice about freelance style of living :).

A while ago I quit an full-time job and now as far as things are going good, financially It's still not as good as it used to be... So basically I am looking for some advice about where and how to advertise my skills to get notice. I find it always the hardest part. For now I decided to build up some kick-ass demo reel and this will take some time. I checked some freelance sites, but they are usually very crowded and most of providers have so many positive opinions in their profiles that I find impossible to compete with them. What would you advice to do for now ? I don't want to go back to full-time.

It's not like I don't have any proper experience. I worked 2 years for Evermotion. And recently finished working as 3d artist on TV-series Noddy that is aired now in UK.

Hi

A lot of the advice you will find on the internet tells you to advertise on the net: Website, Google Adwords, write a blog, use freelancer sites. But think about it: If you asked a librarian where to find some books, what would she say? Or if you asked Gordon Brown which party you should support, would he give a balanced answer? So naturally the advice givers on the internet are internet biased.

I'd say stay off the internet for now. It's saturated. Don't even put your demo reel on it. Use traditional methods. Put your demo reel on your laptop, put some visuals in a binder, ring round some potential clients, and go visit the ones who want an experienced viz guy or gal. Then when you've got some steady clients, invest a little (say £500) in a clean portfolio website so you can give the url out on the phone.

Hope that helps a little. Enjoy being your own boss :)

I'd have to say that it's very convient having your examples and demo reel online.

If anyone asks to see you work, just refer them to your site.

That way you don't have to scramble to get them something in the mail. Bump into them at a party or social event and if they ask for your work, just say "My reel is on www.WhatAnAwesomeDemoReel.com"

Having said that, do NOT use these free photo storage sites - that just doesn't look professional. A domain name and web space is pretty darn cheap now-a-days.

Thanks a lot !

I never really thought about advertising myself more in face2face, but this could give great reasults. Unfortunately there is not much things going on in city I live in.

About the website and blog I already put one up, just to have something. It already get me some jobs. But I feel like demo-reel would show more of my skills. I updated my profile there is link to my current website. Maybe the problem is that in gallery I have to many things mixed up... Architecture, low poly etc. And it may be confusing for potential client. It maybe a good idea to build some separate galleries for different kind of clients. What do you think ?

Thanks.
