As simply described in the title,

Is there a way of showing the end result of the materials in the viewport like you see in the material editor, not just the diffuse but opacity maps etc.

Or maybe i should have added this to the wish lists!! :D

Thanks

i'm using max 2009 with vray sp2. I now active shade is in vray rt and might upgrade to that in near future until i see good report's.

Is there anything i can do in this situation as active shade won't work with vray.

well if i understand this correctly, then i think your solution is very simple.

In the material editor, pick the material you want to show in the view port, and press the "show map in view port button" that looks like a checkered cube. This should show your materials depending on what hierarchy level you are at, so if you pick it at the top (root) level, it should show all maps including diffuse AND opacity together.

But if its more you're looking for (like bump and translucency) then as the guys said, you'd have to seek max 2010 or third party plug ins like vray RT.

Yes vray RT would be good but i was hoping there was a something in-between. And the display all maps does not work at root of material (see attached) This material has an opacity map included unless its something to do with the fact its a .jpeg which doesn't have an alpha channel. Which file is best for opacity.

I use the show map in viewport button which displays all maps (see attached)

So does max 2010 with vray (not RT) display Active Shade?

Can you change the settings on vray RT really low at the start and be able then to crank them up once to get down to finalising the project.
