Tim Saunders
I'm a huge fan of region rendering. Lots of times, there is a lot of stuff rendered in the rectangle region, that is not needed. It would be SUPERB, if you could hit region, and have a drop down selection type, marquee or lasso type, then just click-lasso your region. Tom Hamelrijckx
See 'Region render with a painted mask' item on this link: http://cgarchitect.vismasters.com/tipoftheweek/month.aspx?tipMonth=3&tipYear=2009
Tim Saunders
Hmmm. Interesting, but seems time consuming. I could just do multiple region renders in the time to create a mask, place and size a plane with the opacity map on it. I want the polygonal region render as explained. Justin Hunt
mentalray has "Subset of scene" in two froms, First is a simple way to render selected objects only and is accable in the render dialogue and the other is applied as a lense shader, you add object to a list and mr will automatically generate a mask around those object and output a render with an alpha chanel of that mask. jhv

The lens shader is very nice, though I wish it had more functionality. Like selecting groups, shapes, and such.
Justin Hunt
Its saved me a few times with animations and horrid flashing RPC's I havn't found the haloing too bad. jhv

Indeed it takes a while, but in some situations the (rather small) time investment is worth it (big renders, client that asks for a series of changes). Besides, once the setup is done, you only have to redraw the mask in Photoshop and that's it, really...
LukeC
+1 for the lasso region render. I've wanted this functionality for a while. Nothing more annoying then having a piece of geometry that runs diagonally across your scene that has to be rendered with multiple regions. It would be especially useful if you wanted to send that region off to the farm and only need to send it off once.
