RevitGary
Good question. MR in Max. I build the model in Revit export fbx, xref to Max and add foliage , lighting and materials etc

amer abidi
well the title of the post gets us homophobes running away but on a more serious note, what lighting setup are you using? I dont think it doing your work any justice.. look at the shadows of the palm, seems off. Sun is very low..not providing enough contrast in daylight, and night time view just looks like its viewport lighting! not to bring you down, its just that its obvious you have not yet cracked MR. start off with creating a daylight system and daylight MR exposure settings, and take it from there i think. RevitGary
ummm.... This is done with a mr daylight system, sun and sky. With photographic exposure control
Justin Hunt
it's more the sun angle thats hurting, bring the sun round so it comes in from the top right, almost parallel with the curved facade, like 10 degrees of parallel. Post your settings because there is a seriouse lack of detail in the light. jhv
RevitGary
Well I have changed settings since that render and I dont recall. I will do a rerender this weekend and take note of exact setting and repost. Nothing fancy just daylight system at 3 pm default setting on shadows and reflection precision etc. FG , photographic exposure control no GI. RevitGary
Hey Gary, Personally I would use the MR Physical sky as a background/ environment to get your lighting right first!! ummm I did.
RevitGary
OK Here is a new render same as the old render with settings. no GI to skyportals at top and bottom glass. FG 2 bounces . The pool coping is intentionally medium grey material. The upper floor interior walls are intentionally grey not white. So what can I do better? Thanks!!! Justin Hunt
Those settings are way too low, even for a preview, try the low preset to start with and go up from there What are the portal lights and photometric lights doing? I see no need for them for this type of scene. What is the volume light? Do you need it. Your sun shadows are very soft which explains the lack of shadow detail, jhv
amer abidi
Agreed. Take out portals and photemtrics - no need for them here, in fact portals are probably doing you more bad than good in this case. And decrease the shadow softness of your Sun.
RevitGary
The portals are hopefully lighting up the interior a bit. the photometrics are only around the interior plants. I definitely need these plants lit. I will bump up to FG to low sharpen the shadows and repost. Thanks!!!!
RevitGary
New render. I kept the skyportals. I turned them down to .3 it was too dark inside without them. I added a skyportal on the roof there is a skylight above the inside trees. I kept this at a value of 1 I sharpened the shadows to 1. How am i doing. comments really appreciated The pool looks like it goes from 6" to 12" in depth. it actually goes from 4' to 8' how can i make the pool look deeper? Thanks soo much
Justin Hunt
Much better, not quite there yet though A nice trick to get light samples inside, set the glass objects to "pass through" in the Object Properties -> Mentalray tab. Check out Master Zaps blog for a good water setup. I have been using the pro-materials water and been pleased with the results. For your water it could be the refraction is distorting things too much, try setting it to "Thin Wall" in the advance rendering options. Try increasing the FG Trace Depth to Max 10, Reflection 2 and refraction 8. I suspect that with your settings it is cutting off caculations too soon, thus loosing out on detail. jhv
RevitGary
I made the FG settings you suggested. I dont notice much of a change. it did lighten up the ceilings a bit. I looked at the water settings I didnt see thin walls an option with pro-materials water. Thanks
Justin Hunt
Its in the A&D shader The light levels for inside are fine. The glass needs some reflection If you like shoot me the file (without the textures and plants) and I can have a play. There are a few things that are confusing me and I can't put my finger on what it is. PM me if your OK with that jhv
RevitGary
This is my current solution. I added a sky color of -.1 I know my client will like the blueness in the shadows. I have not added a glass reflection yet. Hows it lookin?
Justin Hunt
improved again, now the plants need attention. The 2D trees are hurting what could be a very good image. jhv
RevitGary
Yeah I have spent considerable time trying to do a 3d seagrape with Onyx. I havent found the correct tree or bush to use as a template yet. see post below http://www.cgarchitect.com/vb/36815-onyx-trees.html im working on glass reflection now
Justin Hunt
Its worth it in the end, specially because you can reuse them later. It will make a big difference at the end of the day. jhv
